have you ever actually worked a job you hate for 50 hours a week just solely for the money? you should try it sometime. it sucks balls. you end up spending way more money than is wise just to distract yourself from the fact that you find 80% of your lived existence a chore.
lol "50 hours." Come work in America for 80+ hrs/wk apart from whatever time you spend at it from being on call 24/7 and join the rest of the drones who have lost their ability to focus clearly due to years of forced multitasking.
in the city it's probably more like 70-80 hours a week. but the normal is 37.5. I just plumped for 50 hours as a decent figure for a 'full time job'. well done to you and cybargs though for working in professions that take up all of your time. you are so cool. odd thing to brag about.

dilbert I'm not sure what you mean. uzique the wage Slave? i don't get it. I worked a full time graduate corporate role that I hated. now I work a much more relaxing and friendly career that I am interested in. my life is better. I'm hoping to turn my literary interests into a full time career. which part of that basic outline do you find ridiculous?

As I said the "guy" is clearly working on something for the Koreans. Just like the engineering companies in the UK in the 90's were building "pipelines" for Saddam and his "supergun"...

lolwat. I'm saying 50+ hours a week is pretty chill in law. Most people sadly work closer to the 60-70+ mark especially in top tier corporate law firms.

Tbh you have to make industry comparisons, and nobody ever really gets 38 hours a week in law.

in your rush to brag about how hardcore your profession is yore missing my point. yore an moran. 50 was a figure I plucked to demonstrate the point that spending most of your waking life doing something you don't enjoy isn't fun, no matter how much money you make.

I enjoy my job, but this sucks. It's 8 am on the Saturday of a 3 day weekend and I'm on the train into the office.

It is weird how much people tie their personality and self worth to their work. Especially after the economic crisis and modern corporate governance.

I can understand someone in the creative arts being proud of putting 80 hours into the studio every week. I can get a doctor or social worker being proud of helping people for 60 hours a week.  But your average accountant or corporate lawyer really doesn't have much to be proud of outside of the size of their bank account.

I spent 70 hours last week counting Wal-Mart's money. Top that one guys.

corporate culture socialises people in that way, it's very much intended.

I wonder if it is just a thing in English speaking countries or it is like that everywhere. I know in Japan it is common for workers to die at their desk or on the store floor. The corporations tell the workers that they aren't just employees but an unit of the bigger corporation. It is balanced out by the fact that companies will keep older obsolete workers onboard because they were loyal to the company and "did their time" there. That sort of reciprocal loyalty doesn't exist here at all.

That's all gone in Japan now. Cost companies too much money especially in a country with a two decade and a half recession.

zique: ok buddy, nobody is really bragging 'how hardcore' it is. nobody is that motarded to think that overworking in a job you hate is a good thing. Everybody knows corporate law has one of the highest burn out rates where most drop out in around the 3-4 year mark. It was obvious I was making a joke to teddy jimmy about 'dat pay'.

Dilbs: will the thingy sink more than it's supposed to like the collins sub

Unions don't represent white collar workers

You misunderstand. Bragging about an all-consuming night-and-day work schedule that causes you to lose track of an entire year or more is akin to beating your chest over how many shards of glass you've jammed under your toenails. It's not cool. It's sad. Granted, there are workaholics in society who take pride in it (probably as a mental self-defense mechanism), but I'm more of a results guy than a beat-your-head-against-a-project-for-five-times-longer-than-necessary-because-your-brain-isn't-working masochist. I didn't want you to come to America to enjoy a life of corporate/industrial wage slavery. I was just saying that in comparison, working a 50-hour week even in a job you hate (also accounting for personal experience with both kinds of work) is a fucking dream.

How on planet earth did you think being invited to become a mindless drone was at all boastful on my part? Do I seem like a recruiter for the Borg to you?

I just hate public sector unions because negotiations are never in good faith. Private sector guys are cutting their own throats if they get greedy, so there's a check there.

From a personal standpoint, I despise pay scales and seniority and working as slow as the slowest guy. I basically dealt with it when I was in the military and it just causes the bulk of the work to land on the shoulders of anyone dumb enough to display a decent work ethic i.e. me. 4 1/2 years was enough of that crap for me.

But again, that's just how I feel. Other people like the feeling of security they get, and that's more important to them. Totally get it. Just not my priority.

The relationship between capital and labor is always confrontational. The workers must always be united against the interest of the bourgeoisie.

My boss semi-retired at the end of the year and I got moved to a different group. Because he was on his way out, my group was slow and I got tasked out to a second boss last year doing energy auditing. My new boss dumped two projects on me three weeks ago and by sheer dumb luck everything is due on Friday. So I'm managing four projects actively in construction from my original boss, three energy audit reports for the other guy, and two design projects for the new boss. I'm hoping that when they see my timecard has 70 hours on it this week they will wake the fuck up.

No they won't. They'll see how well you manage without any help to do the job of two guys. Should've done a shittier job there mate. Now they won't hire the new guy to assist you.
