Whatever, trolls. 14 people wouldn't have died if there were multiple good guys with guns and body armor at the Christmas party.

I really think we need to start thinking about mandatory firearms training starting in middle school. We need trained and ready bystanders to act quickly.

Mandatory civics and philosophy would likely be more productive.

Also identify and stomp on the psychopaths, sociopaths and thugs at an early stage - not laud and reward them.

Just a little bit, I'm not suggesting people should waste their whole life on it - that would be ridiculous.

A minimal understanding of rights, responsibilities and duties would be a good thing - since apparently we can't use bull-whips on plebs any more.

Then maybe we wouldn't have selfish fucks throwing violent tantrums when the world doesn't work out the way they expect.

Yes, everyone needs a PhD in Ethics to be a functional member of society and not kill people

Some basic education is all that's needed, not the modern hipster crap, and a good stomping on the anti-social people and aspects of society.

It's amazing the sheer idiocy that comes from the gun nuts against ANY single motion that they feel infringes any of their 2nd amendment (you know, as in, amendable) rights.

Every time the news (that is, not even an opposing politician) calls for an assault weapon ban, you have people going "durrr, there's no such thing as an assault rifle" as though a semiautomatic AR-15 with 30+ round mags is perfectly reasonable for hunting or home defense and not shooting dozens of kindergarteners or blame places with strict gun laws like Chicago or D.C. for gun crime when the neighboring areas have much looser restrictions that allows for weapons to be readily brought in because you can't make meaningful progress unless there is regulation on the federal level.

Then you have the "you expect criminals to follow the law?" variety who are essentially of the attitude that it's pointless to try anything thanks to the fact that guns are so pervasive in the U.S., thanks to their ilk in previous years. As much as the right bitches about gay marriage being "redefining marriage", they're mute on how the idea of "well-regulated militia" and "bearing arms" has changed in the past 50 years due to the NRA and its goons repeating the lie over and over.

That, too.

The only novel idea the Right has come up with is shitty, childish ways to misspell Obama or his oft-referenced Irish alter ego O'Bama.

There is literally no gun control policy that could stop attacks like this though. I know people want to feel safe, and attacks like these make people feel helpless and demand measures, but the fact is if someone is determined, they can do what they want.

Rape is illegal. People still rape.

Theft is illegal. People still steal.

I know it's fun to mock the NRA, but they're largely right when they say the best way to make yourself safe is to arm yourself. Cops can't be everywhere, nor would we want them to be.

Nothing is perfect, that's true; hence why you still have gun crime in places where they are heavily regulated. It is besides the point that statistically, you almost certainly already are safe. However, it is not the mark of a healthy, civil society where everyone is only nice to each other for fear of being shot to death by anyone else they encounter throughout the day. It is also not a good indicator if you are able to propose unironically to have bulletproof bookbags and armed guards at elementary schools, blaming the "gun-free zones" as though it is reasonable to bring a firearm to such places.

I'm not disagreeing with you. It sucks living in a world like this. I honestly blame the media and the attention they lavish on these people. Crime has dropped for the last 20 years, but the attention given to each one has multiplied exponentially. Did you see the giddy reporters racing through the apartment? They acted like TMZ.

You know, teaching people to think for themselves - not instructing people not to think.

I blame this on the unraveling of the nuclear family, the breakdown of society as a supportive community, and unrealistic expectations pushed by Hollywood.

Widespread availability of concealable high-capacity quick-load machine guns (which is effectively what an AR15 is - I know its semi-auto but its close enough....) does make it much much much much easier for the average angry pin-head to kill a lot of people in a short space of time.
Could the Sandy Hook cretin have achieved the same with a skeet gun? Maybe, but I think there is a reason these nuts always pick the same gun - just as the US military picked it.

In theory, in practice widespread availability of guns means they're ..... widely available - to criminals and crazies too.

Does having a gun on your hip or under your bed actually make it more or less likely you'll be shot? The figures seem to say more likely.

In an ideal world everyone would be smart and educated enough to be able to get through life without deciding the best way to make some stupid point is to slaughter dozens of innocent people.

Our elected leaders are not this smart, they routinely start wars over trivia, what hope is there for the average idiot?

The quality of news has collapsed exponentially, even mainstream new is starting to post Facebook happenings as news.
"Some minor celebrity posted something, someone replied, then it went viral, now it has 1,345,789 likes and still climbing, another minor celebrity commented thusly on twitter.....".

Of course a mass-shooting is a god-send.

Sandy Hook kid could've done the same with a musket or a revolver. His target was unarmed teachers and elementary school students. He could've fucking bayoneted them all and still had time left over.

The short term solution is to arm everyone until the crazies realize they will die the moment they pull out their weapon. Honestly I believe we just need one or two incidents where some hero thwarts a massacre and they'll stop.

The kid weighted 115 pounds. He had a much higher chance of being overpowered and stopped if he didn't have Bushmaster with 30 round clips. You know men work at schools too, right?

Just googled it. The entire SH shooting spree was a grand total of 6 minutes. The police entered the school ten minutes after it started.

I would be very interested in seeing someone kill 30 people with a revolver or musket within 6-10 minutes. It is pretty much impossible.
