It's ridiculous that Apple is removing Civil war games but that doesn't invalidate the new Confederate flag deinvestment movement. It isn't good for society to have those things flying everywhere same way it isn't good to have people driving around with a Nazi flag in Germany or ISIS black standard in Saudi Arabia. Don't totally ban it or put people in prison but the government shouldn't put it on things and businesses should know better than to sell it.

It's not ridiculous, it's perfectly logical. We had one of our regular mass shootings and decided we needed to ban... the Condfederate flag, apparently.SuperJail Warden wrote:

It's more about removing a symbol of the culture that encourages and justifies the thinking that caused the guy to shoot black people. If you take away obvious symbols of something from daily life, you can reduce its influence.DesertFox- wrote:

Would it be OK if the Swastika were flying on govt buildings?Jay wrote:
Nor was he inspired by the flag to gun people down. It's easier to react to tragedy by demonizing symbols than to simply accept that the world is full of random events and people outside of your control.Ty wrote:
I think this is going a bit far. Removal from public buildings sure, making sure people know what they actually represent and taking some steps to make it not quite so prevalent is sensible but lets keep some perspective. This kid didn't walk into a church and shoot nine people dead with a flag.
Mostly this is an example of people with a long simmering agenda using the event to finally get their way. Never let a good tragedy go to waste etc.
Fuck Israel
I'm all for removing it because fuck the backwards part of the country we call the South, it just seems an odd course of action in the wake of another mass shooting, though to be fair, Sandy Hook should have been the most shocking one and fuckall happened in response to that.SuperJail Warden wrote:

I think instead of banning the ISIS flag we should all just treat it normally but gradually replace it with that butt plug flag that so confused CNN at that gay pride parade. Because you just know there'd be some fuck-knob jihadist who wasn't quite on the ball enough to realise he'd just made his dramatic fatwa speech in front of a banner of bum toys. Sure it may be in the context of a horrendous calamity like the Martin Place siege, (the gunman there didn't have the right flag,) but I think given the dull state of affairs a bit of levity would be appreciated.

You do know the southern cross has 5 stars? I understand its hard for a NZer to count up to 5 but this flag will be shown internationally and you don't want to look stupid for another 113 years.
Yeah but I quite like our technically incorrect "abbreviated" version.
Also New Zealanders have no trouble with the number five. Certainly not as much trouble as Australians have with the number sex.

I saw the short-list with 40 flags on the Austrian headlines, but didn't see your name anywhere.

If the new flag doesn't have a full-sized fern leaf on it, and/or still has some remnants of the Union Jack, this whole thing has failed.
My favourite is still the all-black flag with the white fern on it, without anything else.
Has there actually been a suggestion with a kiwi on it?
Yeah there were quite a few kiwi suggestions but to be honest while we are known as kiwis it's a fairly impotent symbol. Kiwis are lovely in person but really they're a weird rotund ground-dwelling bid with a name most people assume refers to a fruit.
I'm a little disappointed in the short list. They're all variations on the same theme really and I'm surprised at how many reference the koru, (spiral,) when so many were adamant that the symbol was too Maori-specific. There were a few designs submitted that more adhered to vexillological norms and it would have been good to have a few of them.
The final four I think will come down to:
Hundertwasser Koru
Gareth Morgan Flag
Otiz Frizzell Koru
Kyle Lockwood Fern
It's also possible that either the Frizzell flag or the Morgan flag will just be the white fern on black instead. I'm pretty sure the Hundertwasser flag will be in there because everyone here liked Friedensreich Hundertwasser so much that we practically dedicated a town to him. Plus it was one of the first flags put forward as a genuine alternative. A Lockwood flag will definitely be among them as it has consistently emerged most popular, the question will be what version. The red white and blue one has been around for longer but the black white blue and red one has been emerging as more popular for some time. They'll have to pick one though otherwise you're just going to split the vote, (though as I understand it's a preference vote so maybe it won't matter.)

Possibly. People don't particularly like an all black flag. The think black's dull or forboding or negative - though all colours have their negative connotations so I don't know what that's about. I think black is elegant and powerful - Renoir called it the "queen of colours" after all. The ISIS comparison thing is a fairly recent and nonsensical point and a pretty weak argument.
Some keep badmouthing the fern too which annoys me given its historical and cultural importance that goes well beyond it's use as a logo for the All Blacks. Some people have been saying it looks like a fish skeleton or a white feather. If you're a New Zealander and you don't know what the silver fern is there's no fucking hope for you.
I'm okay with it and I'd be fine voting for it if it gets put up against our current flag. I think it's the most iconic symbol of the country, and not just because of the rugby team. Every single time we need a symbol we immediately go for the fern on black. The second someone suggests it should be our flag suddenly "oh no that's too far". Eh?

I don't like any of those 4. The best flags are simple, have only straight lines (or the occasional circle), easy to recognise and reproduce by a 6 year old. Think Germany, France, all the Scandinavian countries, Japan, South Africa, Jamaica etc.
The Gareth Morgan Flag meets those requirements, but on the other hand it's just ugly.
This points out the basics to good design.
And every single one of these is fucking shit.

Should just take the American flag, remove the stars, and out a big white leaf in the blue area. Boom you got yourself a flag to be proud of.
But there aren't 13 colonies in New Zealand.SuperJail Warden wrote:
