You've got more points to go now, they've changed the system; 18 points for a 100-level, 22 for a 200 and 28 for a 300...but its still 5 papers...they changed the requirements for Bachelor degrees too. Did you know they've remodelled/renamed the foundry? Its called the Common Room now, and looks fairly high-class.vedds wrote:
Im not studying anymore - gave it away in 2001 Still got 30 points to go to get a damn degree . Was at Canterbury, spent many an hour at the Foundry. Export dry isnt bad at all, although i prefer Plain old DB or Speights.Pubic wrote:
CD used to be a good beer, its gone downhill in recent years...I've been partial to a bit of the export dry lately, its good stuff and not a lot of people seem to drink it. Where abouts are you studying vedds, lincoln or canterbury? I'm doing COSC and PHIL at canterbury at the mo

Bastards. Well I cant see me ever getting back and finishing anyway - the degree i was doing wont really assist with my business these days. When did they mess with the Foundry? and whats the point of making it nice? this thread has bought back what few memories I have of many a drunken aftenoon with $4 jugs there............... oh for the old days.Pubic wrote:

And back on topic:
Cameron, I dont think the union jack in our flag denigrates NZ at all, It simply reflects the major force in the shaping of our county as it is today. The Tino Rangatiratanga flag is most definitly not ancient, being invented in 1990 as a reaction to the lack of maori motif in a competition organised to mark the 150th anaversary of the Treaty of Waitangi (considered our Founding Document). One of the problems with this ensign is the way it is associated with divisive activists such as Tame Iti and his separatist "Tuhoe Embassy" (in Taneatua in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, dont know if they are still running that)
To clean it up a bit...they've also raised drink prices I understand. Fewer people go there, but spend more when the do = same income from fewer customers. It looks more like the sorta place you'd order Cointreau on the rocks now, rather than a jug of tui/speights/CD. The clientell is more sedate now.vedds wrote:

What the flag symbolises IS open to interpretation...the union jack could mean colonial affiliation, or part of NZ's history. The southern cross, our place in the world, and the blue background the pacfic ocean.

... which is different from my flag's symbolism which goes a bit like this:
Stylised Silver Fern: Because it looks cool.
Southern Cross: Because it looks cool.
Black Background: Because it looks cool.
Red Background: Because it looks cool.
I chose my colours also because Shihad use them... hey, that's what it needs! A Shihad shield!
Or alternativly, just the shield on its own.

It should be the All Blacks flag.
Lol that reminds me of SS lightning, don't mind me. Nice flags.
you have that flag because we captured the island......and i think the queen is still head of state so shes got a say.
Silver Fern m8 imho
Silver Fern is pretty cool... yours is the best but since it isn't in the polls I'd go with
Southern-cross/Silver Fern flag
Southern-cross/Silver Fern flag
I agree with Cameron Poe on his point regarding Collonial symbols on flags, I cant believe New Zealand and Australia haven't thrown off the shackles of their old oppressors yet... celebrate your proud ancient heritage, go for the Tino Rangatiratanga flag or, failing that, from a purely objective design point of view the Southern-cross/Silver Fern flag is quite nice. The Black and Red looks quite cool too ...reminds me of Angola.
I was talking to an Indian guy the last day about Britain and he said he wished India had never broken away from Britain!? What do you think freedom or Economic safety encumbered with the ties of collonialism? I'd go for freedom every time ...BLACK POWER!

Hundertwasser's Koru Flag is woeful by the way. Did that Austrian painter use Microsoft Word Art for his design?... I'd use the Union jack before that one ...and i wouldn't wipe my black ass with a union jack!
Ty;
Good work on all. However, the trend I see in the contenders (mind you, this post is the first I've heard of this, so I'm kind of shooting from the hip here) is that they are trying to make the flag into an artistic statement, and not a symbol of national roots & heritage. The current NZ flag is exactly that - it states that 'NZ is a part of the British Empire in the southern hemisphere."
Wow, talk about "Being beaten down by The Man."
So, if you are going to change the flag to eliminate the Union Jack, fine, but replace it with something that states your National heritage. The Silver Fern, while wicked cool looking, just isn't that image.
Having said all of that - I'll go vote for Ty's flag. Maybe I'll use that when I split from the US and form my own country on a small island someplace.

Union Flag is on the New Zealand and Australian flags because Britain founded them as the Western modern societies they are today. To say that they should have "an ancient and indigenous symbol" is plain ridiculous as the majority of people aren't indigenous. To say that they depreciate their country by displaying the flag of the country that founded their country is also stupid.
If they wish to change their flag that is entirely up to them, but as usual Cameron Poe has to bring in something about Ireland, and colonialism.

So thought it would be fun to re-visit this. The flag debate has come up again since the Government promised a referendum next year - and my design is quite a popular option it seems. Kyle Lockwood's design, (put as "Southern-cross/Silver Fern flag",) is one of the frontrunners but many quite like the use of the fern I used and the colours I chose, (which I switched to black corner with a blue majority some time ago.)
So if you ever see this flying from a flag pole you'll know the people of New Zealand picked the coolest option.

Which star represents Mordor?
oh, i had a reply ready and noticed the letter 'L' in the OP
You know, I always wondered why the stars were red. I realize the NZ flag is older, but I always think of it as a communist symbol.
Anyway, I dub your flag NZ Postal Service, 'cause it reminds me of USPS..

Your new flag is nice. The old flag had a bad color scheme. The red and black make it seem hostile. It looked like something a fascist party would use.
Agreed. I was only 19 when I made it and the red/white/black kind of speaks to teenage angst more than anything else. And teenage lack of aesthetic reasoning ability.
@War Man - Allegedly the stars are red to recognise the Maori people as red is an important colour to Maori. I doubt the Maori were a consideration when the flag was first designed though so I'm not entirely sure as to the reason. More likely it's simply to reflect the colours of the Union Jack.
NZ was the first flag to feature the Southern Cross constellation which is probably why it's technically incorrect on our flag, (the constellation has five stars.)

The old one looks like the red-and-black flag used by anarchists in the Spanish civil war.
