you could test it with a multimeter if you have one but you don't strike me as the type of guy who's going to be doing that any time soon

hmmm... it is possible. it has been extremely hot here this week, and the pc has been on full-time, though that may just be a coincidence. saying that, the mobo had a speaker set-up to make a noise whenever the cpu or case temp got too high... and that noise definitely worked, because i had heard it several times in the past when pushing new OC builds for gaming (this time it was all on stock clocks, so no dangers there).

i've removed everything from the mobo anyway and even removed the cmos battery. going to let it all drain for an hour or so.

dauntless i have a multimeter you twonk. i manually rebuilt and electrically wired/soldered/calibrated my turntables. just because i read poetry doesn't mean i can't stick two fucking probes on a circuit. didn't think of that though. i have shorted the mobo before to jump-start it when the case wasn't all properly wired up, but that didn't work this time either (obviously as there's nothing wrong with the case).

it can only be two things, seeing as there's no power going through to the mobo at all:

PSU dead, mobo dead. i'm guessing because even the PSU fans don't power on when it's given power and the 'on' switch is hit, that the PSU has failed. whether it's taken the mobo with it or any other parts that were powered-on i can't find out until i get the PSU RMA'd (luckily still within 2 months of its 3-year warranty). the PSU probably over-heated because of the extremely hot conditions, or else just failed. it was a mid-range corsair CX anyway, nothing fancy, so i wouldn't be surprised if it has just failed. the computer was on 24/7 for about 2 months, even when the weather temps were way up. if it overheated, it's probably a lottery draw between the PSU auto-failing as a safety-measure/the fuse blowing, or it getting unstable and failing because of not enough/too much voltage. not enough, i just replace the PSU; too much instability, yeah, the rest of my mobo is probably going to need replacing.

thanks for with-holding your arcane knowledge from me, though. i have built PC's in the past. was just posting here to see if anyone else had thoughts that may not occur to me.

This is the test Corsair will almost undoubtably ask you to do (they did when I had to RMA and always post it in support threads).


But if the PSU fan isn't spinning up at all then it certainly sounds dead. I have never been a fan of Corsair's CX series PSUs tbh.
