yeah sure, it has a definite declared 'finishing point'. but since GoT has blown up, the author has been enjoying himself going on press-tours, giving lectures, and generally wearing weird shirts to fan conventions. he's luxuriating in his success, basically, rather than writing for 8 hours a day like a fastidious writer does when they're success starved and hungry for it. GoT will never be finished. i'm willing to put money on it. the last book or two will be ghost-written by someone who is shit and they'll be empty and soul-less and all you stupid fantasy geeks that weren't satisfied with a real history of the war of the roses will feel violated and defrauded and basically spiritually dead.unnamednewbie13 wrote:
I thought GoT was set for seven books? If you want a series without end, I'd complain about Xanth. I think it's somewhere in its late thirties now. Volumes...not years.Uzique The Lesser wrote:

reading can either be mind-mush entertainment or intellectually enriching. nobody ever went to a certain niche of porn for 'refinement'. it's all the same thing. game of thrones is not ulysses. if you're going to invest time and thought-space into a book, there are indeed many wiser investments than some fantasy series that will likely never be finished or concluded.
Sure, there are tons of books out there speckled with literary acclaim, but you're not going to melt your brain by reading a fantasy novel.
and i'll laugh. the only piece of literature that has ever justified 7 volumes of length and waffling is a la recherche du temps perdu. and that is extreme length with a serious aesthetic and formalist 'point'. and even that has a long part in the middle that is only interesting if you are a homosexual.

In the real War of the Roses, the Dothraki seized the crown, right?
yeah this worries me. Either get on the treadmill or get writing. Otherwise it will be an eternity of fan fiction.RTHKI wrote:

why should he? he's hit the jackpot that every fantasy writer aims to hit. he has a huge fanbase, a 'phenomenon'/fashion/hype-wave based around his works, and there are now plenty of fan festivals and conventions and award ceremonies to attend. why should he finish the books? hit the treadmill... to continue working... for someone else? fuck that. if i was 60+ i would be buying hookers and champagne and living out my last days as i wanted.jsnipy wrote:

I have a wager going with some people I know that Theon Greyjoy will get the Iron Throne in the end.
Think about it, G.R.R. Martin is a fucking troll, whats more trolly than that? A dickless, insane, filth and shit covered maniac with no teeth ends up ruling Westeros. He's the King they all deserve. Ohh and also it will bring the story full circle from Mad King to Insane King.

reek rhymes with weak rhymes with leak
I remember calculating based on the number of pages covered in the books per season that there would easily need to be 10-15 seasons to complete the saga in the TV show, which would surprise the absolute hell out of me if they even came close. I'm annoyed by all these people who have decided to read the books and then poo-poo the show though. They would never have heard of it without HBO making an entertaining show about it.
And Baz Luhrmann to direct. So it will be for "people like Jay."jsnipy wrote:

I would be surprised too. But book length can have surprisingly little impact on the length of a movie.DesertFox- wrote:

LOLS
But to be fair, The Hobbit is covering more material books than just The Hobbit.
HBO have said they will split some books into two seasons so they don't catch up with the books. I still think they will though.
that tends to happen when the author diesAussieReaper wrote:

This show is so laughably bad.
erm what
It's a very good visual adaptation of a decent/good fantasy series. This is far from 'bad'.

I'm rather tempted to accept this as a wager.Uzique The Lesser wrote:

if george rr martin survives to finish the game of thrones books, i hereby solemnly pledge that i will read the first one.
otherwise no fucking way, i've got an oprah biography and a few self-help evangelical christian guides to get through on my refined reading list.

How many books are there? How many are planned? What book is the show on now?
5 books so far, 7 books planned, show is halfway the third now.
