I went to SUNY Maritime College in NYC whose focus is on sending its cadets out to sea as 3rd Mates or 3rd Assistant Engineers on commercial ships. Most of the engineers are Marine Engineers and make damn good operating engineers in power and HVAC plants. I graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.Nyte wrote:

And I've been here ever since. Been wanting to get out of it to another company (Qualcomm) but working here for 5.5 years, I have quite a few incentives that prevent me from leaving.

we don't even have liberal arts in the UK. it's humanities or nothing. we don't have 'liberal arts' colleges. but sociology is not a liberal art. liberal arts are based on classical/humanist educations. some parts may involve reading in sociological theory, but it always comes back to the 'arts' and philosophy-type basis. sociology as an actual college discipline involves all sorts of empiricist testing and research, and is truly outside the remit of a liberal arts education. it's a social science, and it comes with all the methods of data collection and testing that you'd associate with it. liberal arts majors don't carry around clipboards.Cybargs wrote:
