New York Theft

My girlfriend is going to New York for a few days in May, and isn't sure on whether or not to bring her phone with her, or whether to get a crappy one. She says she's heard that theft is really bad there, but is that just to make tourists be extra guarded, or is it really that bad?

I believe she'll be walking round with a backpack on, but not a "touristy" looking one. She's thinking of getting a little padlock for the zips.

Any other advice from people who live/have been there, in regards to keeping her shit safe?

I don't know about New York, when I lived in Philly I made it a point to never pull out my phone in public unless absolutely necessary. Most crimes are crimes of opportunity so staying safe is all about limiting opportunities. Don't walk around with your face glued to your phone, don't sit on the subway texting on your phone, it's all too easy to swipe that phone right outta your hands and bolt. The most important thing is to always be aware of your surroundings. As long as she doesn't wander around like a clueless bumbling tourist she should be fine.

Been 6 times in N.Y. and I've felt safer there than in Helsinki at night. Just like Wreck said, be aware of your surroundings and you'll (she in this case) be ok. If she still is weary, tell her to buy a cheap prepaid thing at a store and tell you the number so you can contact her for kisses and souvenir requests.

I've never felt unsafe in new york.

Is she going alone? She could get some travel insurance (with theft cover) if she's worried about it but like in any city try not to lose shit and do what wreckognize said.

Having said that, I stupidly lost my passport last time I was there (fell out of my pocket) and some nice guy handed it in to a police station and i got it back, thank god because I would have probably been stuck there for a few days while the embassy sorted it.

I've never been robbed, or seen anyone robbed for that matter. Just take extra precautions in tourist traps like Times Square I guess.
