uuuum. that analogy completely fails. because cs1.6 still has the BIGGEST competitive scene of any CS. cs:source has a bigger competitive scene than CS:GO. cs:Go is the LEAST PLAYED CS game of them all. NO LEAGUES are taking it up seriously. NO TOURNAMENTS with any major future plans to support a CS:GO scene.

so in your analogy, literally EVERYONE is still using post-mail.

seriously what reality are you people from?

yeah, i've played a bunch of games competitively, been involved in lots of teams and league communities, and generally understand the recent history of FPS gaming. you clearly do not. one thing i wasn't banned for was lacking a fucking clue.

wow great counter-argument. i didn't delete dota2 from the list so my entire points about FPS games are wrong. okay. though i did say when you asked "what is the most popular competitive game now?" i did say LoL and dota2. so there you go. i did also say "fps is dead" in comparison to them, esports wise. which is exactly what the chart represents. but okay. smart guy.

cod4 isn't popular anymore. it's about as popular as cod2, actually. the most popular and competitive game these last few years is TF2. sorry you can't argue against it, it's fact. whether or you not you had that knowledge is your problem. i said the two best competitive games since bf2 were first cod4, and then tf2. that is entirely true.

you said shootmania and cs:go are 'special' exceptions and are the new modern FPS greats. lol. cs:go is a failure. shootmania hasn't even done well enough to be called a failure. i am right, you are irrefutably wrong.

good day.

although you could always argue cod4 isn't well represented on steam's charts because most people already owned call of duty 4 before it came to the steam store. here's the player-figures of the last 24 hours from xfire, where most old cod1/cod2/cod4 players hang-out - rather than steam:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 58,957
Call of Duty 2 36,260

which as you can see, puts both games at the same player-figure as tf2/counter-strike 1.6.

have a nice day

yeah well I guess you're right about the "mail" but if cod4 / tf2 are the latest released fps games you can come up with , CSGO actually is on that list and there is already (was in alpha) copetitive play in STORM it can't be that worthless , and you don't have to lol at people so hard for them being wrong (making mistakes ) when you your self can't even copy paste without making mistakes

good day to you to !

cs:go is on the list... at the bottom. below both its prequels. which are at least 5-10 years older than it. cs:go has no competitive support. it is a failure. please.

The closest Quake-like fun I've had in a game that wasn't Quake was in the Unreal Tournament series, barring UT3 which fell flat for me for some odd reason. The Battlefield series isn't even nearly the same category of shooter. It has more in common with Warcraft 2 than it does with Quake but again, not really tournament-quality.

And CoD4 was the last best CoD title.
what the fuck are you TALKING ABOUT? TF2 was absolutely perfectly balanced ON RELEASE for competitive play. it was the best-balanced team game to come out in recent memory. TF2's balance is was great. the only thing that has affected it negatively has been tons of unlocks in chaotic pubservers. even then, there's not really that much imbalance. TF2 is literally one of the best and most-cited examples of any FPS game for balanced, team-based competitive play.

jesus christ some of you people make me laugh. talking like you know anything about FPS games. TF2 "didn't deserve to be called seriously competitive". whahahahahahaha. team fortress classic and team fortress 2 are some of the best competitive FPS games in the PC's history. there is not a single thing that is unbalanced about TF2's competitive play.
"was"

They did a great job with it for awhile, then all the new non-cosmetic weapons and gear that was thrown in made me lose interest. I'm sure a lot of it has been tweaked to bring things back over the years, but I've already moved on. Look, I know TF was spawned from Quake and it must piss you off horribly to hear anything negative said about it, but TF2, regardless of its well-deserved place in FPS history, definitely doesn't offer the same hyper-paced level of competition that something like Quake Live can.

And stop sending out junk karmas. You can PM me if you want to whine.

none of those things affected competitive play in a single way. please learn to know what you're talking about. tf2 was never "too wonky to ever be competitively viable". tf2's competitive scene is still going strongly. no unlock has ever affected that negatively.

also comparing tf2 to quake is plain funny. quake is a 1v1 duel-gametype. the best of its sort. tf2 is about cooperative team-play. the best of its sort. are you gonna compare your beloved warhammer games to total war, too?

when i can read posts? holy shit dude. you posted in some authoritative and conclusive tone about a game you have clearly NEVER ever played competitively. you said:

Team Fortress 2 is a fun game, but the balance is so wonky that it doesn't really deserve to be called seriously competitive.
what? i read that loud and clear. it is categorically WRONG. tf2 was in development at the balancing and refining stage for HALF A DECADE. the vanilla/competitive set-up of the game has perfect team balance. perfect class synergy. it works amazingly. it was renowned and celebrated from launch as one of the tightest and well-gelled team-based fps to ever come out. everything works extremely well. no one class, weapon, or playstyle is better than the other. it's incredibly well done. and rightly celebrated as such.

how am i reading that wrongly? "balance is so wonky"? uuuuh, please point out ONE SINGLE THING to me from tf2's competitive gameplay that has "wonky balance". go on. i'm reading your posts. tell me. i'd love to know. i played it since beta and i can think of one thing that was ever imbalanced in the history of tf2's competitive play/class-setups, and that was patched out within 3 weeks of the game's final launch into retail. but please. tell me.

you then said

The closest Quake-like fun I've had in a game that wasn't Quake was in the Unreal Tournament series, barring UT3 which fell flat for me for some odd reason.
at which point i guessed you were just talking on a different point/tangent. because team fortress has never tried to be 'quake-like' in gameplay. it has always been about team-work and class interplay. quake is about individual/duel skill, with one player micro-managing all 'roles' and 'weapons'. team fortress has always been class-assigned and about direct, actual teamwork. team fortress is 'quake-like' in the same way call of duty 1 is 'quake-like', i.e. sharing the most basic engine properties. that's it.

i look forward to your response,
yours faithfully,
someone who knows what the fuck he's talking about.

oh and i only said 'was' talking about tf2's success in past tense, because the esports spotlight has moved onto MOBA now, leaving all FPS games as past-tense affairs. it still is perfectly balanced for competitive. nothing has changed. it still is the best team-based shooter.

You of all highly-opinionated people who throw your authoritative and conclusive shit around a gaming forum full of opinions accuse me of making a post sound authoritative and conclusive? For some reason I find that laughable. I've already as much said that "TF2 lost me when blah blah blah." Sounds like, I dunno, an opinion! Right? Or should I spell it out in winky faces.

I believe (and I say "believe" because if I don't you're going to lose your shit) the height of TF2's enjoyability was before they began to add, to reuse a word, "wonky," bits of gear and new weapons. I can get around fighting someone with a rubber duck on his head, but if something's putting more holes in me because a guy farmed it for months or bought it for seven dollars, my face contorts into a 'not-impressed' expression. Some people don't mind, and I'm not going to argue with them. It's their game too.

I also didn't say it was like Quake. I said it was SPAWNED from Quake. I remember playing the old mods. Big difference, which is why I questioned your comprehension. Instead, it seems like you took everything above to mean that I'm stepping all over TF2's shining quality and somehow calling it a lesser game than other greats. I'm not. I simply prefer the more pure competitive dynamic of games like Quake.

But of course, you know faaar more about games than I do. I'm like thirty so I must be going senile already.

I look forward to ignoring your response.

what you are singularly failing to understand is that the bonus items that were added into TF2 never touched tf2's competitive play. just like quake, and just like every FPS game to ever follow that, competitive play normally entails its own rulesets and restrictions. so your 'critique' of TF2 losing the right to be "deservingly" called "seriously competitive" (your words) is complete fucking nonsense. none of the bonus items even graced a tf2 match. so how did that invalidate the game's incredible competitive appeal? a: it didn't. you're talking out of your arse.

and furthermore, even though this only applies to public servers that allow all unlocks, this is also grade-a bullshit:

I believe (and I say "believe" because if I don't you're going to lose your shit) the height of TF2's enjoyability was before they began to add, to reuse a word, "wonky," bits of gear and new weapons. there is no farming in tf2. everyone gets allocated all their items per week on a minimal time-consumption basis. none of the unlocks or store weapons are 'pay to win'. no new item they have introduced is imbalanced or clearly overpowered. nothing you can "farm" or "buy" will make your game performance more favourable. "if someone's putting more holes in me"... no. doesn't happen. grade a bullshit, again.

as a moderator surely you know that posting irrelevant crap in topics is basically spam. i hope you're AWM'ing yourself.

and no, i'm not "upset" because you are dissing a game i like. i have no problem with someone who has played a SINGLE competitive match having the (informed) opinion that the competitive play is somehow "flawed" or "unsuitable". however what you are doing is saying the game isn't "competitively serious" when you quite obviously have never played a single competitive match in your life. that's not an 'opinion'. that's you mouthing off as if you know something when you don't. that offends me, because it is ignorance, not a person's entitled-subjective opinion. criticizing tf2's competitive suitability because of the item store is more than retarded.

no, i don't have a problem with someone "thinking otherwise". if someone is factually wrong though, i'm going to correct them. unlocks never interfered with tf2's competitive play and cs:go i'm afraid never even got as many players as old cs1.6

who are you?

i could care less if people dislike tf2. a bunch of people who actually LIKE tf2 are 4chan furbies and trade idiots. i'm not saying tf2 is the gold standard of gaming taste. what i am saying is that criticizing its competitive potential (which it has been the best fps game for, in the last 5 years) with no clue is basically spam. newbie didn't say he disliked the game because he didn't like all the new unlocks, or hats (which is mere opinion). he said he disliked it because it was too "wonky" to be a "seriously competitive" game. categorically false: tf2's competitive balance is well-regarded as one of the best team-based games of all time. he then said he didn't like playing because someone could have a weapon/item bought using the steam store or "grinded" that would kill him better. categorically wrong. there is no "grinding", there's a max item limit per week, and it's very low, and no weapons give an advantage. even with all the extra items adding complexity-by-variety, there is no 'imbalance' or OP-ness. if you dislike it because of all the choice in public play now... okay, fine. your opinion. but don't say it makes the game unbalanced, or pay-to-win. complete utter fucking nonsense.

I rarely play it anymore, but its funny every time i do the amount of wackiness that's introduced, kinda like being in cryo for 50 years to wake up and find everyone has turned into George Clinton.
