im astounded person of interest is that high on the list.  the main character is literally the most boring, monotonous person ive ever seen on a show before

i think it's more to do with the ethics of a largely white media elite of producers and show-writers having these shows commissioned. where a bunch of dudes follow cops into poor and deprived areas - largely black, as the poverty line seems to follow the race line often in america - to make tv shows that will show young black men being chased and wrestled to the ground, all for the titillation of 'middle america', or whatever such demographic it is. it's kind of hazy. those shows are exploitative, and kind of venal.

also a portrayal doesn't have to be "conscious" or 'intended' for it to have a negative effect, or to be worth calling out. that's pretty silly.
That's more of a criticism on the show itself, really. It does dramatize and exploit (something US TV is renowned for doing). But I don't see how the show itself can be called racist if there is no negative intent. I can see with what angle you're looking at it by saying that but I don't see the point.

Never said they shouldn't be in Europe. It was about Turkey joining the EU. It shouldn't. Most of the Turks would agree with that these days anyway. You don't even know what the debate is about and what implications something like that carries anyway so I don't see why you feel the need to have an opinion on it.

you don't see how a show like that can be detrimental to public good if there is no 'negative intent'? what a naive and simplistic outlook you have.

I don't see how not airing it is somehow better. We already know there's much more crime in poor urban areas. We also know that in the US a lot of poor people are minorities, especially in cities. A program following a city PD as they try to solve a murder in the first 48 hours is going to showcase lots of poor urban areas and lots of minorities. It doesn't try to dehumanize them or portray them in a certain light, any negative connotation you attach to it is a product of your own mind. I feel that preventing a show like that from being aired because of a perceived racial angle makes you look like you're trying to sweep it under the rug because you think people will use to affirm their racist ideologies.

And perhaps some will, but I don't think there's any real harm in a TV show. Watching a show like the first 48 is not how someone ends up racist. Actually, I really don't know what makes someone tick that way especially not in the 21st century and least of all in a society with as much interracial contact and mingling as there is in the US. I'm pretty sure it isn't a reality TV show following a city PD that makes people racist though.

Oh and it doesn't just show police officers clubbing down black people, but also the families of the victims.

the simple fact is that, as long as people of a certain race end up being portrayed or featured in the media only in negative images or connotations, i.e. black people most often showing up on prime-time news in the context of crime, or on 'legal thriller' type shows, those stereotypes and negative images only become more reinforced. if there's a problem of equal (or accurate) representation in a media system, then that media system's mis-representation becomes a subtle ideological force. if you're a member of a racial minority and the majority of times you see people of your colour on the tv, or in the music business, or in popular drama or w/e is basically when a negative character is being portrayed... that grinds you down, and wears on you. didn't someone say earlier in this thread that it's rare to see a black person in the role of a successful person on US tv? can't remember where i heard that. it may have actually been in a comparison with UK television.

would just like to add the disclaimer that my above paragraph is talking about generalities. just foresaw a bunch of people linking me to the fresh prince of bel air wiki or something. i mean in general, in terms of media theory, a media/communications system has the ability to be an ideological apparatus through the images that it disseminates.

As someone who watches Cops fairly regularly, it seems the people who end up getting arrested are would pretty much always qualify as poor, but it's not extremely one sided in the race of the perpetrator. From what I recall in recent episodes, you had stuff ranging from two old white dudes popping pills in a car to a black teenager accused of waving/firing a gun about in a residential area, to a black and white zebra running down the street.

fair enough. i remember there is some historical analysis of that sort of show that definitely shows there being a bit of a race bias in the past. different time though, i suppose. also, lol: "as someone who watches cops fairly regularly" sounds like one of the most depressing vignettes of mid-west existence imaginable

I honestly can't believe people watch that show.

Can't say it won't grind people down, but what are they going to do about it? Blame the media for being racist because poor minorities get arrested on TV? That's weak.

yeah it's really weak to expect the media to use its enormous power and influence responsibly or ethically.

That mall cop has serious in real life issues. He became famous because of a interview video that made it onto reddit where he describes how much pride he takes in his job of defending some ghetto mall. Reddit ended up donating $20,000 for him to buy new gear like a taze gun, a real gun, a chest camera, and more. He now post every time he gets into an argument with someone at the mall. He recntly lost his job so his unbalanced ass is now in need of work.
