That makes a lot more sense then, so people can learn the game mechanics first

But it's still not 1999 mode if they hold your hand first.

Are they hinting on System Shock 2?
Because that game was really hard when I first played.
What with all those respawning enemies, breaking weapons and annoying security computer AI sending more enemies whenever you triggered an alarm.
Plus coupled with the constant scary "ghost" occurances...

And it was no help at all if you were a veteran in Doom, Duke or Quake.

I haven't played a good new game in what feels like years, this game should be head and shoulders above all the truckloads of indy shovelware I have no interest in and all the other FPSes with no real immersive single-player campaign anymore

Have you played Deus Ex 1, System Shock 2 or No One Lives Forever 2 yet?
Those games are more than a decade old, but I have a hunch that they will still be better.

I have played and beat Deus Ex 1, I haven't played System Shock 2 yet but it's on my list, and I've never even heard of the No One Lives Forever series

It's a series of 1960's inspired espionage games, taking many elements from series like James Bond, with a lof parody and in-jokes like Austin Powers.
Heavy focus on stealth gameplay, wacky gadgets disguised as regular items and exotic locations.
E.g. items like lip-stick grenades, perfume spray bottle with poison gas, a mechanical poodle, briefcase rocket launcher... and locations like East Germany, Bavaria, Morocco, India, Antarctica and even outer space on a space station.

Things like lock picking, keypad hacking and distracting enemies are also present.
In the first game, you frequently come back to your secret headquarters, learning new skills and getting instructed on new gadgets Q-style.
In the second game you're mainly in the field.

Great 1960s Beat/Jazz/Lounge music soundtrack, especially in the second game.
Did I already mention that your main character is a sexy female?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_One_Lives_Forever
(Try to acquire the GOTY edition, which has an additional mission.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_One_Liv … M.%27s_Way

Go for it!
Play those two games!

--------------------
Warning:
Completely ignore the 3rd game in the series, the pre-quel "Contract Jack".
They exchanged the female protagonist with a clichéd, buffed male, completely removed all gadgets and stealth gameplay, making this a redundant run-and-gun shooter, not better than your generic 1990s FPS game.
They even added a Desert Eagle pistol, which didn't even exist in the 1960s, just to cater for the pubescent teens.
It seems like if little boys can't see the buxom female player character in 3rd person all the time, they rather pretend to be a male character, Rambo-style.

I just beat it, WOW that was a weird ending.  The ending has my brain so dead, I can't really think of anything more to say about the game at the moment.  It was like watching Inception

The wiki has said this as well, I don't understand where they're getting it from though, the events of BioShock 1 & 2 have nothing to do with anything that happens in Infinite or its "time loop" or whatever, BioShock Infinite could've happened or not happened and Andrew Ryan still would've created Rapture(if I recall, the developers mentioned that Infinite might not even have been canon to 1 & 2, even though Rapture does appear at the end of Infinite in an insignificant role).  I hope the creators don't consider it true, I hate these "Now nothing ever happened because everything canceled each other out/was all just a dream" type of endings where they feel like they're being really deep by taking you for a ride and then making all of it not matter at all at the end.  It's not a morally good or bad ending, it's just a wtf did I just watch ending

The first BioShock introduced Flaming_Maniac to Ayn Rand's philosophy. I'm not joking.
