I use an electric trimmer and the closest I'll go is about 3mm, as I've learned the painful way what happens if you get too close. I've also done my girlfriend using the same method, worked well.
just shave your ballz in the gym showers and let it be their problem. as long as you're careful its easier than using scissors.
if its an overgrown mess use a beard trimmer first, keep the trim guard on and use the closest setting.

Trimmers work fine, I've put a razor to my sack and as long as you are careful you wont damage anything.

yeah i use a trimmer as well, does a great job for 90% of it then touchup with a razor. both are different ones than i use on my face obviously.
