WEP connections

I am well aware how shit WEP is, and how it is not compatible with windows 7, and i know how to set up a connection for WEP.
My internet router is using WEP and windows will fail to connect to the router even thou it is the list of available connections, it wont bring up the password box.
I had this problem before when i moved into the house, and remember it worked after i found a setting and ticked/unticked a box but i cant remember what or where it was. The only reason im getting the problem is that i reformatted recently.
Anyone have any ideas?

Don't use WEP.
It has been known to be vulnerable since 2001.
It'll take less than a minute to eavesdrop on the packet stream to find out the key.

Use at least WPA2.

If you go the security tab of the properties of the wireless network you area attempting to connect to (Control Panel-->Network and Sharing-->"Manage Wireless Networks"), under security type choose "No authentication" then choose "WEP" for encryption type. Finally fill in key.

Sorry dude, already tried that, about 6 times. Doesnt work.
I can get into the router settings on another device, and i think there is an option to change it to WPA, and if it was just me on the network i would try it. But its not my network, and i dont know what will happen to other devices already connecting in the current setup. I also dont know if there is a device that Needs WEP..
I definitely managed to do this before without changing snything on the router though. This is pissing me off so badly. I remember doing it before, snd it was something quite simple, but hidden away.

If I were stuck in that situation I would use an XP VM with two homes bridged as a proxy.

Does the router support making multiple networks (multiple SSIDs, subnets, and sets of security settings)?

Random, also make sure router is not MAC address filtering.

ok i bit the bullet and changed the router setting to WPA, it gave me instant access to the router via my laptop, which is what i wasn't getting before, but I had to change the password for everything to get it. Then we weren't getting internet anywhere, so I changed it back, and in the router setting made sure it was 'Shared' rather than 'Open' (which seemed to be the default setting), and it worked almost instantly.
I have no clue.

So are you using WEP or WPA now? I'm assuming you have a router that's too old to support WPA2 such as the WRT54G

you can support WPA2 onA a WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware

That is pretty fuckin awesome

What else does that firmware do, I've heard about it but I haven't read into it extensively, not ever having had a WRT54G, although my brother still has one that's been giving him issues

you can extend the wireless signal by using an extra DD-WRT router as a repeater

Turns out I'm using the WPA connection I set up. Had to change the password, so the landlord is goign to know we fucked around with something when he can't log in to his own network lol. He hasn't said anything yet though..

Nah it's all cool. They even thanked me because I said it might have sorted out some of our connectivity issues.
I was only worried that he might have minded that we went into his router settings and changed shit without asking him lol
