The only other thing I'd say is for most legal action a lawyer is not required.

If you can figure out the system, find out which application needs to be presented before which court and when it shouldn't really cost anything - except you can be liable for the other side's costs.

You're not obliged to hire a lawyer to go to law, and lawyers are just as obliged to answer letters from non-lawyers, courts are obliged to hear you also. Its not the closed shop lawyers will tell you it is.

I did not know this. I will have to look into this a lot more than I have been.

True. It's already looking quite expensive from the get go. I think I will try to handle this by myself for as long as I can and see what eventuates. The more I look into this (anecdotal family evidence and accounts) the more it looks like my uncle did indeed knowingly mishandle the estate.
Always will be. That's why so many people get away with it.

All I can say is good luck, I hope your uncle responds. If that fails, though, as Dilbert says, you can do much of the work yourself. Even suing him can be done on your own.
I like pie.

I've managed to find the firm that handled the estate and emailed them yesterday. They got back to me today and said the file is archived off-site, they will retrieve it and respond in a few days. Kinda anxious to see what the breakdown is.

Got a phone call from a lawyer today. Said they had located the file on the estate but it is in two parts, with one part being on their old server and they have to physically do something to get it back. I'm not sure what she meant, though she said she even got the IT guys to start it back up after being out of action for 6+ years but they have to do this other thing. The other half of the estate break down will be emailed to me in a couple days apparently. Said she also contacted my uncle as is her prerogative since he is her client.

The impression I got is he could have been telling the truth the whole time. Whilst the possibility of getting some additional money would be great, I think I prefer for it to have been executed correctly by my uncle and this can all be put to rest without any legal/family dramas. I guess I just have to wait and see.

^ This is lawyer speak, I can translate:

"We found the document no problem, but we had to figure out a way to charge you $1500 for photocopying a few pages and this was the best we could come up with"
