No idea on bus price, but just looked up Sydney to goldcoast on the 14th and it'll cost you as little as $79. But in all honesty Australia is just far to big and spread out the only real way to see anything is hiring a car.PrivateVendetta wrote:
So planning a trip to Aus in January, pretty much got it all booked and planned, but i can change anything free of charge, so any hints or tips would be nice. What to avoid, where to stay etc. etc.
7th leave london, arrive in Singapore on the 8th, few days, arrive in Sydney on the 11th.
Got a hostel booked until the 14th in Sydney, then was gonna take Greyhound bus to Gold coast (would it be better to fly? was going to get 2000km pass and use it later on as well) Thats a 12 hour bus trip or a 1hr flight
Gold Coast 15th - 18th Fly to Melbourne
Melbourne 18th - 21st, bus to Adelaide on the 22nd 10 hour by bus or 1hr flight
Adelaide until about the 26th (staying with friends), then bus to Sydney and fly home on 27th or so just swapping planes on the way back. 18hr by bus or 2hr flight. and there's nothing on the way (unless they go to coast in which case its probably more like 30hrs by bus
Budget is about $3700 not including flights, I know it should be enough, and would prefer not to spend all of it for the sake of it, but have some leeway to do more stuff.
Comments?
Ok, so don't bother seeing things in between the cities, and fly between gold coast and Syd/Mel?
Was thinking it would cut down on costs and I might meet some similar people, but if I fly and get to the hostel (not hotel) then I'll get more out of it I guess.
I'm assuming Gold Coast is worth the trip? Or should I take it out and spend more time/money in Syd/Mel/Adl area? Or should I reorder a few days to spend longer in gold coast?
I AM going to Adelaide, no questions. Seeing some of my best mates there.

What do you want to see and do?
There's plenty between cities, but you're not going to see shit on a bus and it'll just take 10 times as long and cost more. The gold coast is nice, but really I'd head much further north to cairns to experience something truly different.

I repeat, Fuck. ALL. Of. That.
Everyone flies. JetStar and Virgin are both $99 from ADL to SYD on the 26th (It is our national holiday so expect booked out everything).
My state was founded by Batman. Your opinion is invalid.

12-15 hours on a bus doesnt sound fun
It would be better if there were hoop snakes on it.Adams_BJ wrote:

My Dad lives in Mildura, I live in Wagga. Normally a 5.5 - 6 hour car trip. On a bus it took 9 hours. 3.5 - 4 extra fucking hours. I got to Japan and Hong Kong in the same amount of time.
I'd say don't bother making a trip to the rainforest from Brisbane/Gold Coast.Kustav wrote:
The hinterland here is boring, for your time here its probably not worth it.
Its a long way on scary/shitty roads to see not very much - unless you really want to see a rainforest.
Up to you but I'd say some kind of hinterland trip to get a sense of the wide open nothingness is worthwhile.
I enjoyed the Melbourne-Adelaide Coast Road, a friend of mine didn't.
A German girl I met did the Alice-Adelaide bus trip and said it was two wasted days of nothing.
From Adelaide there's Kangaroo Island - although I haven't been. Wilpena Pound is good but may be a little far.
Morialta and Cleland Conservation Park (native zoo) are worth a visit.

Fuck Israel
I liked going to O'Reilly's at Lamington National Park when I was on the Gold Coast. It's really nice but given that you would have to dedicate a day of your Queensland visit to it, (and given that one theme park takes up the greater part of a day,) it's probably not worth it.

So I added up my domestic flights and hostel expenditure, $630.
Budget is about $3000 for the whole trip.
Am I missing something? I guess I just have a lot of beer money, which i gather I'm going to need..

Personally, if I wanted to experience a super-long bus trip through oz nowhereland, I'd just use street view on Google Maps.
that money is for drinkin n fightin round the worldPrivateVendetta wrote:

and buying spoons knives.
I'd fly instead of a bus to the Gold Coast, although the only cheap flights with either Virgin or Jetstar are at night time (don't fly Tiger. Qantas is more expensive).
Actually, I'd just fly everywhere. But I guess the bus would be a good way to see the country.
