Is this laptop fixable?

Given the age of my girlfriend's laptop of 4-5 years old it's questionable. This only happened today,

It also says that 'the screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or one that's compatible with direct 3D'. When turned on, where it should still be black it has weird little white pixel dots around the screen.

Laptop is Asus. Graphics card is: nVidia GeForce 9500M GS.

She's in Sydney and I'm in Brisbane. It's been suggested but I'm thinking perhaps the GPU has overheated and is fucked. She said she left it on all day and I've since read that model GPU had overheating issues.

I'm certain I've seen screens like that caused by software issues. I'd say uninstall the driver completely, reinstall it with what NVIDIA recommends for the mobile model, then download/install DirectX over what's already there. Wouldn't hurt to run a scan for malware, either.

Download and install Driver Sweeper. Boot into safe mode, run Driver Sweeper and nuke all the Nvidia driver files. Re-install appropriate driver from Nvidia.

Thanks guys. I'll have to give it a crack either late tonight via TeamViwer or tomorrow as she has a 12.5 hour working day today and was up till after 1am taking someone to the hospital last night, so I think she'll finish work and just go straight to sleep (and I'll be back at work myself).

She's currently borrowed a laptop from a friend who has a spare, but seriously neither of us have had time.

She works 8-5 mon-fri, sometimes finishing later and then some evenings she teaches singing from 5:30 up to 8:30. Other nights she has a songwriting group she attends (NSAI) that goes up till 10:30.

I have a night job that starts at 4:15pm through to 8:30am the following day, also working during the day some days.

It's solved problems for me on laptops, problems that simply restarting alone didn't solve.
Not sure why, but it's something I'll continue to do on laptops before spending more time on other shit.
I could have went and started fucking with drivers , but Im glad I didn't.

Bend the screen slightly, if the picture flickers it's the screen cable. If not, it's the screen or the GPU. With you saying the laptop has a reputation for overheating, I'm leaning towards GPU. Break it down, and heatgun the GPU. It's a last resort, and won't last forever, but it's better than nothing.
