Mainly for Euro's but might be worth reading for others.

The EU has scientific evidence showing that its current pilot fatigue law is potentially unsafe.

But this evidence is not reflected in the latest proposal for new EU-wide flight and duty time limits for pilots and cabin crew, issued on 1 Oct. 2012 by the European Aviation Safety Agency. Instead, the proposal reflects the commercial interest of the airlines which lobbied strongly for lax fatigue rules.

If not changed, the new rules will reduce safety levels in several EU countries, e.g. by allowing a pilot to land a plane after having been awake for over 22 hours.

you should crash a plane after flying for too long, that would get them to change their minds quick

I'm not going to lie; I didn't read any of the articles, but how will this impact long distance flights?
Will the 22h landings only be used in case of emergency or will there no longer be 22h+ flights?

Longest flight in the world is 15H - Dallas/LA to Sydney I believe. They probably should switch pilots after that long of a flight if it's a connected flight eg SYD-HK-LDN

The EASA proposal allows for pilots who did start their standby duty at 7:00 a.m. and conduct a flight starting at 11:00 a.m. to fly through the night until 1:00 a.m. the next day. In case of unforeseen delays it would be even possible to fly until 3:00 a.m.

The normal time would be until 1am, but if you get delays etc. you can add 'discretionary time' to allow you to get back home and complete the flight, rather than being stranded where the delay took place. This can be up to 2 hours.

If a flight is really long you have rest periods built in and extra crew, but if it's on the threshold and you only do it with 2, then we could be 'on duty' for a lot longer beforehand and then do the flight as normal.

Now if there was a vote to stop 250 hour cadets paying 30k to jump the queue of far more able and experienced pilots into the right hand seat of jet, that would be something I would vote for, and that would increase safety tenfold.

you stick the thing on autopilot for 99% of the flight, how the frig are you tired.

Well that's a clueless question.

There's more to just pushing a button to engage the autopilot. We have to monitor the flightpath and radios for the whole flight, check fuel and plan how the autopilot flies in the descent. The descent is one of the most challenging parts of a flight, energy management, planning and co-ordination.

Even if we didn't do any of that, every been tired after doing a day of absolutely nothing? It's still duty where we have to be switched on and alert. Changes of state of activeness, low activity for a few hours in the cruise to high activity in the descent and approach at the end of a 10 hour day is killer. Not to mention you can do 6 flights in one day, with high activity the whole time, or 2 flights with long periods of low activity.

Aren't you with RyanAir? Ooh, I have far more pressing petitions for them.

This covers every pilot in the EU.
Rage on RYR all you want, enough people do, they're big enough to defend themselves. This is beside company politics.

In all seriousness, laws like this are completely in-line with RyanAir, who I can only assume lobbied hard to keep the regulations weak.

They blamed pilot fatigue for that jet crash in residential Jamaica Queens NY a long way back. Killed a bunch of people.
