If the Olympics itself was a competition there would be more rules governing the Olympic teams countries could bring and methods to fairly determine a victor. There is no competition unless there is equal standing. You don't have a football match where one team brings 11 players and the other brings 125 players and then ask them to play to determine who's best. You win Olympic events, you do not win the Olympics. Total medal count has only ever been bragging rights.

Paintball would be an awesome Olympic sport! You'd have to have a lot of rules concerning gear - particularly markers and ammo (eg. max fps at muzzle, are powder rounds allowed etc) - but it could work.
