My grandma found somebody who knows somebody who works in the NSA and says there is a bunch of IT guys in it that mostly have Aspergers but aren't really graduates or anything else and the person said they may be able to get me in if I submit a resumee.  The only problem is I obviously won't be able to get a security clearance for it because I've smoked in the last year.

My parents of course know about the job and think it's perfect and it would be a waste for me not to do it but I don't know if there's any way for me to actually get in.  I've smoked as recently as two or three weeks ago and I think they do hair testing anyway which is a long term history scan I think.

What can I do?

Well, the reason I mentioned it is because that basically means it's full of people pretty much just like me except these are probably the complete unmotivated social recluses that cashed in their straight edge lifestyle for a nice stable government job that recognizes how unbelievably good they are with computers without having gone through all the college bullshit.

Or so I assume

Are you unbelievably  good with computers? If not then don't bother. Unless you have something special to give, you generally need the qualifications.
Also, fairly certain hair samples are like a 3 month history.

Awwwww yeeeea!

I started at Logica this week. But. I got a call on monday that I came in second place with another interview I went to last week and the dude asked if I'd be interested if the position happens to open up. I said yeah and he said he'd inform me on wednesday about it. So he called yesterday and asked me to come over for a chat today. I went to chat and I got the job before 82 other applicants Tomorrow I'mma go resign from Logica and now I'm just enjoying my 500€/month raise, 35km shorter drive to work, more interesting work I'm getting and my cold beers I got from the store on my way home

FUCKING FUCK I'M HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!

So here's the situation as it stands currently. I have a job as a server/maintenance/clean-up guy at this retirement place. I get $190 every two weeks for working 2 hour shifts Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. I also work the breakfast and lunch shift on Saturday. So this job is really handy in that it was easy and didn't conflict with school and got me some spending money.

Now I need to go on to bigger and better things. In the new week or two I need to find time to see an optician and if I can see 20/40 (which is what they said I could see when I got my glasses a year ago) I'll be in boot camp soon. However, if for some reason I cannot see 20/40 I need a plan B.

I'm not particularly good at any one thing. I've done a lot of internship work as an electrician and as a network engineer. I studied computer science at college for a year where I learned C, Java, PHP, XHTML, and CSS; how to build a computer, trouble shooting, and do other administrative stuff with file accessibility, and network sharing, bla bla bla, etc. I've also done a lot of landscaping work and just general handy work around houses.  So those are all my qualifications.

I hate college. I would like nothing more than to avoid it and try to live a middle class life, not living paycheck to paycheck but not rolling in money either. What are my opportunities? I'm hard working, honest, on time, learn quick, and responsible. I just hate being behind a desk or sitting for extended periods of time but those jobs seem to pay the most.

I just don't know what to do, I feel lost and unproductive right now. I just sit around at home or go out with friends while waiting for my lame low-pay few-hours work to roll around and I also gotta see an optometrist for my eyes but I don't have a car that I can use to just go there whenever I want. I feel so useless right now, I want a car so I can get a better job also but I need the job to get the car and I need the car to get the job.

My family is broke so they can't help me.

Moving to Sydney in January. I had considered going into retail to eventually work in a music store.

Then I got my tax return and saw as an unqualified part time support worker I earned $45k last year. There's no way I'm earning that much in retail when I start out. Also there is a lot more work in my sector in Sydney. Couple my experience with the fact I'm male working in an industry that has on average an 87% female workforce (so being male makes me more empoyable) and I can practically waltz into a job when I get there.

Guess I'm staying in this line of work for a while longer, at least till I have moved and established a stable income.

My family is broke so they can't help me.
My ex girlfriend left home at 14. She had not seen nor heard from her dad since she was 7, her mum had bipolar and was constantly unwell (physical assaults were common) and she had spent a few years in and out of foster care.

She had nowhere to stay so slept on a friend's parent's doorstep for three weeks till the let her stay with them.

She completed year 12 doing full time study and working 30 hours a week to have enough money to pay rent at a place she got herself.

Fast forward and she's now doing a thesis to complete her degree and will most likely be offered honours. She has a lot of hospitality experience but recently left the industry to do admin in the sector (environmental management) she ultimately will end up qualified to work in.

She has worked her arse off and coupled with her shit upbringing the odds were against her. Getting a scholarship certainly helped, and she has really made the most of the advantage she got when she has grown up very disadvantaged.

The moral of the story is that there are those who are in a far worse situation than you and yet they will strive to succeed in spite of the challenges life throws at them.

Which is what I'm trying to do. I'm just asking for some advice on what some good jobs would be for my job skills. I've been looking around but I can't seem to find one. I keep lacking like one or two things of their long lists and they won't take me.

I didn't realize asking for help made me a bum...

Also hasn't this been discussed months ago re: your job skills and there was talk of engineering and what not?

Just do an electrical apprenticeship. The money will be low to start with but once you qualify you have options and you'll be earning far more than at any point in your life to date.

Get a loan for a car, and/or scounge one from the old folks - we've had this discussion before.

Don't discount college, after 10 years manual work you might be ready for a desk job and without college it won't be an option.

I didn't enjoy being stuck in an office, but its comfy now. You want to be a 50 year old landscaper? No you don't. You'll be uncompetitive apart from the pain.

I'd suggest learning some skill and/or trade. If you're prepared to work unsocial hours in poor conditions you can make great money. Some skills are always in demand and can save you money for your own work if nothing else.
I'd suggest electrician as a start, later you could go into designing electrical installations.
Welder, move onto shop drawings.
Excavator driver - always handy to have a ticket to operate those.

There's probably a lot of other jobs....

It's ridiculous, I've got a meager certification, yet EVERYTHING here needs a degree. There's no place where I can apply to to go in at the lowest possible position and gain experience/work my way up
