Just like if I was writing a book, I give characters story-oriented names that make sense. If it was an Argonian, I'd more or less follow this guide for the style of it. Imperial? Roman-ish name. For a Nord, it should've probably been something like Edda Iron-Face but I was eager to start playing and the name was readily available from one of my mains on Mount & Blade. And that's about as apologetic as you're going to get from me. I've friends who've played through Mass Effect and other games with both male and female characters, and you don't find me harassing them about it.
Characters with significant game progress: Morrowind? Male Argonian. Oblivion? Male Khajiit, female Imperial (for the evil quests). Skyrim? Female Nord, male Argonian (for the evil quests; don't feel as bad about being a "cannibal" with a lizard face).

Thought about starting the thieves guild quests with my main. Read up a little, and it turns out that according to game lore, when you join the Nightingales your soul is bound to Nocturnal for the remainder of your life and death. Fuck that shit, the dragonborn isn't going to guard a dusty old Daedra dustfart's shrine for eternity, even if he/she/it is more "good" than "evil."
I'll pick it up with my evil cannibal lizardman and let all the nasty Daedra I've already quested for argue over his soul.
