Here is the thing Cougar - I think it is reasonable to feel insecure and/or threatened when you are around african americans now, because of your prior experiences. It is not because you are becoming racist. This is simplifying it a bit, but think about when you get in a car accident from some one rear-ending you. For the next six months, you constantly check your rear-view when you break, checking to make sure no one rear-ends you again. Your past and most recent emotional interaction was violence and derogatory statements with an african american, and now your mind is going into fight or flight mode.

This guy literally came from the bottom of no where, working in a sweatshop making T-shirts and Shoes for a dollar a day from the age of 5, until he saved up enough money for a passport and plane ticket to America. Once here he got a job washing windows until he could afford new clothes and a car. Then he saved up money to take computer classes at a community college, WASHING WINDOWS. Once he got his "degree" he got a job working desktop support for Dell, saved his money for more technical degrees and a more reliable vehicle, until FINALLY, he got a job working at the same company I work for. This guy makes nearly twice as much as me now and he came from a shittier place than any "ghetto" in America can even dream of being. So don't feed me that "born into it bullshit. Why can someone who raps about selling drugs, pimping, being a gang banger, and killing other "niggas" come into a town and sell out a arena and be labeled by the media as a success story and role model for all "underprivileged" black folks, but OMG if the bands KISS, Marlyn Mansion, Drowning Pool, Dixie Chicks, Korn, or Alice Cooper come to town, everyone in their dog is out protesting about their very presence in town. Then the media gets a hold of this and spins it to make the protesters look like good Samaritans trying to protect their children from the evils of rock (or the un-American-ness of the Dixie Chicks). Meanwhile, 50 Cent is three blocks away rapping about how he sold some crack to a whore and got shot 9 times blah blah, but that's OK.

It is natural to identify the most obvious traits (race) that the people that offended you all had in common. And fear will create a prejudice quicker than any other emotion.
The main difference is that if you are racists you no longer accept the individuals of a race as equal. Thus it doesn't matter if the person of the race you hate is good or bad or smart or dumb, you could care less because the mere being of a certain race is bad in your mind.
I would say that everyone is Prejudice toward everyone before they get to know them and can make an informed decision based on more than just appearance. For instance if I see a guy with suite and tie I pre-judge him to be successful/safe and if I see a guy in a ratty old shirt and dirty jeans I pre-judge him to be poor/dangerous. Obviously I can be wrong about the people but it is how humans work and what kept us alive during more dangerous times.
