Is this a primary or secondary cell though?Stingray24 wrote:
A newer type of lithium cell, called the lithium-air cell, has theoretical energy densities more than 1000 times greater than the lithium-ion type. Instead of using metal oxides in the positive electrode, lithium-air cells use carbon, which is lighter and reacts with oxygen from the air around it to produce an electrical current. This results in a 500 mile range for a electric car battery instead of the 100 mile range of the current technology.

Believe it's the primary. You're correct about viability, their biggest challenge is chemical instability limits the lifespan when recharging. Various materials are being tested to solve that issue. Full scale prototype by 2013, commercial use is targeted for 2020.heggs wrote:

There are zinc air cells used in hearing aids that work similarly (primary cells), with the entire mass of the cell being the reactive material that interacts with the air, allowing for a large capacity in a small volume.
As cool as this is, might not be commercially viable just yet.
