i walked past him at the boiler room (arguably the crucible for all dj's) and nobody was giving him any recognition. he's massive in american teen-boy circles but nobody in the dj'ing world takes him seriously. what he 'does' isn't dj'ing and he doesn't intend it to be... the 'art of dj'ing', so to speak, isn't his interest at all. nor the audiences'. people don't go to skrillex shows to appreciate a 'good' dj or his craft... they go to be hit with chainsaw mid-range bass. it's more like a nu-metal gig than a real 'dance' event, and is far from a dj 'performance'.
with that said there's a lot to be said (in a separate argument) about technology and dj'ing. not every dj has to have 2x turntables and a mixer nowadays - technology is changing the game. you get purists and progressivists on both sides. though this is irrelevant cause skrillex is contributing nothing of worth to either view.

Because he's more of dubstep (or whatever you want to call it) producer, he can't really do much to his tracks on the spot, so effectively he just rocks up and presses play on a load of his songs. Nothing particularly wrong with that. He isn't a DJ and I don't think he proclaims to be one.
lol clearly you've never seen someone like pearson sound dj. dubstep is a dance music sub-culture. producers are expected to be able to dj. every single producer in the uk scene dj's amazingly well. that's how dance music cultures exist - everyone mixes, few have the talent/inclination to produce, and often times people manage the pressing/releases of their own vinyl. dj'ing is a totally different skillset to producing, agreed, but they're not that exclusive. if you've grown up and are interested in the music, you'll probably be able to mix it. literally every single good producer (with few exceptions) in the 'dubstep' scene mixes. you're talking out of your ass, basically...

one of the years best underground producers, also one of the top reputed live dj's, also a member of a small artist-run label that has dominated the uk bass scene for years, too. this is how it's done right (and look at the results). you really can't make excuses about dj/producer divide in dance music. it's not as if people are asking some introspective electronica geek to dj his stuff live. dance producers make music that is meant to be mixed in live sets. you'd think they'd be pretty good at it themselves (how else will you get an ear for it?)Microwave wrote:

i haven't been to outlook festival, no, it's in croatia. i've been to a few swamp81 nights though at various venues, incl. their annual big one. i've also seen loads of the individual swamp81 acts individually. they're all good and are total models for how it's done. but by no means the only label doing that - every good label is. i'm just using outlook videos cause i remember them showcasing as much of the dj as the audience.

Dubstep is mainstream now so artists that can only produce beats with no mixing ability (like Skrillex) can get away with it.

i'd say deadmau5 and skrillex are the two top examples of guys that are 'famous live performers' (lol) but don't actually do any real performance. deadmau5 has said on record before that he hates dj'ing. he basically gets paid to turn up and play one of his albums whilst wearing a fucking gimmick suit. yeah, nice one.
