The basic tenets of the religion are honesty, plain speech and dress, pacifism, no swearing of oaths, and there is more that I'm forgetting. As for plainness, I don't chase designer labels and actually kind of frown upon that stuff, I don't believe in displays of wealth, I don't believe in hiding my thoughts and ideas behind a wall of academic-sounding language. I failed at the pacifism part for a while but I'm making up for lost time

jay i think most of those things are just lucky coincidences for you really, isn't it? you don't talk in academic formalese because you're not academic. you don't chase designer labels and frown upon it because you were born poor and have major class/wealth hang-ups. you don't swear oaths except when they involve full-time employment and a discounted education, in which case you're all about the oaths. i'd say you're occasionally a quaker by blindluck, most of the times you're just... you.

I was using 'academic formalese' as an example. Americans on the whole speak plainly by default.

Most people who are born poor try to chase designer labels to overcompensate. It's why they get labeled nouveau riche.

When joining the military, there is an option to 'affirm' rather than 'swear' that I made use of

just as many people born poor spite rich/wealthy people all their lives and go out of their way to hate all middle/upper class affectation. for every nouveau riche arriviste there's a guy that keeps his head down and mutters under his breath.

It depends on your audience. Using an expanded vocabulary when talking to people that barely passed high school makes you appear haughty. That's what Quakers frown upon.

no i just think it's funny how you're conveniently constructing your identity retroactively around this whole 'quaker' thing, when the causes are obviously much different than the ethos of your grade school. you didn't choose an academic life and you didn't study an academic degree - that's why you can't 'do' academic talk or discussion. it's a specialist language you simply haven't been taught. it has nothing to do with "oh i was raised a quaker so i shun complex speech for humble locution". you're just retroactively attributing that to you so it covers all the bases. painful to watch.

How is my degree non-academic? Because it was math and science heavy at the expense of humanities and the arts? Please. I had to do internships and research papers and independent study just like you.

An engineering degree is just an applied, rather than theoretical, physics degree. It's not herp derp let's go in a garage and work on cars all day. Seriously, stop, I know you have issues with all the engineers on this forum, but this line of argument makes you look like a fool.

There is a difference between talking down to someone and speaking in a linguistically simple manor. I wouldn't expect my nephews to understand certain complex words. However when conversing with another adult I expect that person to have an adult's comprehension of the language.

e: However I don't consciously check myself when speaking to children. If they hear a word they have never heard before they will most likely ask what it means as it is the nature of children to ask questions.
