'The Go-Between' was pretty racy, and IIRC one of the characters blew his head off with a shotgun.
Great stuff for 14 yr olds.

i think the main objection in schools is the overt use of obscenity. a lot of literature will have that as part of its aesthetic. they definitely won't teach kathy acker at anything pre-college level, ever. especially in america. don't you guys have like fussy-mummy parent committees?

sigh, i was trying to write a response showing why i don't care and why it is useless.

but honestly, when i really think about it, it isn't.

i just really hate literary analysis.  sure, once i figure it out, it's cool, but i never feel like it was worth the effort i made in trying to discover the message the author is trying to convey.

i like reading, it's just that i want to kill myself when i'm trying to analyze literature.  i also believe i'm a pretty shitty writer.  maybe the subject of english just isn't meant for me

you guys realize that i'm a senior in high school, right?  almost everyone in my class is 18?  i don't believe we're too young for this stuff, and i doubt any parents would complain about their 18 year olds reading a few obscenities.

We all started our lives sliding out of a vagina covered in disgusting excretions, I don't see what the problem is with obscenity.
People who believe in fairy stories seem to have a problem with the normal disgustingness of life.

funny that in narratology the fairy tale (in its literal, actual form) has a very similar function (i.e. making sense, sanitizing).

i'm fine with any language as long as it has a point and isnt gratuitous. swearing for the sake or taking up page space or 'dramatizing' dialogue is lazy writing. james joyce is my favourite swearer. my favourite smutty writer, too. fuck that guy was creative.

i don't think obscenity (swearing in particular) has much to do with religious belief. people can be scandalized by that sort of thing without having any belief in a higher power. on a bit of a tangent now, but there you go. the point has been made: classic literature is very often transgressive and subversive on release. ulysses is a great example. best novel of all time, without any doubt really, but was banned in america on publication for talking openly about pissing, shitting, masturbation etc. but now we're barely disgusted by that at all. everything moves on and standards change. doesn't mean all classic literature is 'safe' and cosy, though-- quite the opposite. macbeth's post was completely wrong on almost every single point.

lol catcher in the rye: SO MUCH SWEARING OMG ON BANNED BOOK LIST. But in reality its about some kid with PTSD and bitches about everything.

I had good english teachers in HS, we read the Woman Warrior (about chinese women and shit) and its kinda hard to understand parts of the book without knowing chinese culture and bit of language. So my teacher was happy the whole class was full of kids with chinese backgrounds

a kid with ptsd? eerm. it's a shame a catcher in the rye is such an over-prescribed book because it's actually pretty good. j.d. knows what's up and he can write pretty well. it's also a shame that a bunch of mongs end up writing posts like the above about it.

Read into it. Holden pretty much had PTSD with all those flashbacks about his brother and blamed himself for a lot of things (survivors guilt).

PTSD? He's just a whining slacker, he doesn't have PTSD.

@Uzi Newbie was talking about the books he read in school being considered classics. I was answering as to why most of the books high schoolers are forced to read are held in such high regard.

around the same period there's a lot more writing that overtly or ostensibly deals with themes of trauma, loss, grief, shellshock etc. and i don't really think j.d. was going for that in his work. sure you can read it in between the lines if you're some doctor trying to find your lucky number but i don't think j.d. was really interested in that. ptsd is a total anachronism and didn't even exist then-- and as i said, lots of other (much better) writing was being done dealing with topics like trauma, dealing with memory, shock and loss etc. catcher is a great book cause it's an eloquent, stylistic expression of the angst that every young adult feels, and it also captures something of a wider contextual zeitgeist of malaise and restlessness. my 2 cents. or you could just say it's about some slacker benefit-cheat commie sonofabitch that should just get a fucking job and like read some rand or something.

in that case it's normally to do with thematics. a book is an easy, go-to and (normally) engaging way to get students thinking about a thematic topic that supplements other syllabus material, e.g. to kill a mockingbird to get talking about racism and that period in u.s. history, or dickens to start thinking about social relations. i don't think high-schools are much concerned with canonicity, or only teaching high examples of literature. it's more just using an easy, obvious example of a book that touches on a wider concern.

Yeah, I would tend to agree with that.  Almost all of HS "Classic lit" has relevant social or emotional content (otherwise, they wouldn't last and would not be "classics.)

Personally, Catcher's main character just annoyed me.  I hated reading that book.  I guess I have a low tolerance for whining, in general.

I liked the book when I read it, but it was 15 years ago at this point. I read it for fun as it was never assigned reading for me.
