There is something wrong with us all when we stake ideological claims and divide into camps left and right. What's wrong is that we are being suckered by a two party system that promotes what is essentially a one party rule. As long as Republicans convince conservatives that the left is evil and dangerous we will vote for them. As long as the left sells the point that the right is a corporate machine dominated by religious fanatics they will sometimes succeed in winning elections.
The trouble is when either party is in power they generally do the opposite of what they claimed, and in review, seem to be working together for some as yet unknown purpose that doesn't seem to be particularly good for America.
What can we do ( besides get rid of Bush, I've heard that already )?

There is only one way to fix our system. Create a viable third party. Unfortunately, that is very difficult to do in this country. A lot of people don't vote for a third party candidate because they think that it will just be a wasted vote, and it would be right now. But, IMO, if more people vote for third parties they will eventually gain enough momentum to become viable. That's why I say Libertarian FTW!

You could possibly do away with the entire electoral college and utilize today's technology to register the individual votes of all of those who vote here. Then it comes down to how the people themselves want to vote, and not how many votes it takes to influence an electoral college vote. More regional parties would start to surface, and there should be an effort to drop the cost of campaigns (or maybe put a cap on campaign spending) in order for parties to efficiently get their message out to the nation.

Um, I'm not a Democrat. Perhaps English was not your first language, but you've read a bit beyond what I posted. I keep track of information coming out of the mouths of Democrats and Republicans and both, unsuprisingly, seek to villanize one another.

I will accept the "young man" comment, as I am only in my mid twenties. Gandalf, for example, lived hundreds of times longer than anyone alive today and was still called "young Master Gandalf" by Treebeard, but no...he didn't complain, and neither shall I.

However, I don't think that your response in any way "thwarts" my point.

The electoral college was not started to simplify vote counting. I don't see how doing away with it would make "more regional parties surface" ?
The spending cap is an Idea, but we would need balance and an unbiased media to.

The electoral college was instituted as a way to balance power between the cities and rural (agricultural) areas.
For example with the majority of votes coming from an urban areas, legislation important to farming would never pass.

Simpler still, by false promisees of free everything you could (almost) swing an election just by carrying a few slums.

Would you rather have New Rap CDs or Food to feed the world?

An unbiased media will never happen. Really no one can be unbiased because you will always favor one idea over another. But you might not agree with that party. I agree with some things the republicans do, but will I vote republican, not sure. If people spent more time investigating who they are voting for and what those people they are voting for stand for, we might have a leader that is better supported by the country. One where the majority of the people support his core values and ideological ideas.
