Open gates + killing box > defending a bunch of walls. Abuses the ai's stupidity, but that's not our fault, is it?
TW battle AI could never handle sieges well. Even in the older TW game they would line up their troops outside cities and castles to get butchered by arrows.
Field battles is where the AI has a edge due to their instant reflexes and omniscience. You can knock out that advantage though with a liberal use of the pause button.

The AI does seem to be a fan of big columns of troops and straight lines of attack. If they do try to flank me, it's usually with one regiment of cavalry or something. They can get an advantage over me if they stay put so that I have to come to them. Usually, I get a pretty sweet setup before the battle where I can defend against an enemy onslaught or easily take an advantageous position on the map. Once I got shrapnel shot, I was mincing columns of their troops to pieces while they just ran back and forth. Hell, one of my biggest victories came from a siege where they poured out of the artillery fort (since I was diagonal and their cannons couldn't hit me) up the hill where my army was perched under murderous fire and artillery.
so if the repairing walls thing is a bug how do you repair walls?
I think you have to tear down the fortifiaction and then rebuild it. Better not to let it come under siege imo.
I usually just scale the walls with line infantry so I don't damage the fortifications. Works every time.

In my last campaign as Austria I took all of Europe (including Russia), the Middle East and North Africa.
I've started a new campaign as Britain. I've taken all of North America and I'm about to take France and Spain's European territories then take all Spain's former territories in Central/South America.
