I just received an email, stating the announcement of the rebirth of the X franchise:

http://www.egosoft.com/games/x_rebirth/info_en.php

According to a short interview with the Devs, it´s supposed to be much more personal, easier to get into and faster, but still as big and deep as it´s predecessors.

I´m excited

So...X4.

How many bloody game and movie sequels are ambiguously called Rebirth or Resurrection or Redemption or Revolution some such crap. Screw trying to keep track of the order.

Forgot Retribution.

But I've always seen these games on Steam, but never actually tried. Not quite sure what game it is, but I love Sins if that helps.

Never played Sins so I dunno. It´s hard to compare it to something, tbh. It got the complexity, depth and setting of EVE, but with a higher focus on building your own economic empire. Building factories, trading, you do this all with your ship, flying around. If your interested, you can find a massive thread on mainly X3 here:
http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=130031

@un13: Please don´t go OCD over this, it is not X4. It has the same basic mechanics, but a different universe where it´s set and is supposed to come with so many improvements and features over the previous X titles, that it´s a new start alltogether.

I also love how Steam completely ignores series and sequel order when sorting your games.

Even if I stick the total wars in their own folder (if logging on with another computer doesn't mess that up straight away), they're still in a jumbled mess. And moreso when I gotta scroll UUUUUUP and DOOOOOWN to get at games like Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron and their various retail mods with names from Arsenal of Democracy to Victoria. Steam cannot distinguish between something like Retribution and Revolution if, say, Revolution comes before Retribution. BLEH.

Luckily, Arkham City comes alphabetically after Arkham Asylum.

What's the problem? The issue, at least on Steam, could be easily resolved with some sort of metadata attached to games that allow you to sort by company, series and/or genre. Anyone with any sort of large library is likely to have them sorted in some manner other than by title alone.

I could get past it if I didn't keep having to scroll up and down to find certain games, then picking my brain trying to remember which of the ambiguously-titled ones came before the other.

Am excited about X4, though. The reduction of micromanagement should speed up gameplay nicely.

Holy shit, you care way to much about sequel names. Like every thread with a sequel that isnt GAME 2 you go on about it.

Does 'Rebirth' really add that much mystique? It takes me 14 pagedowns to scroll through my Steam library. Metadata for just the game titles alone would not be that hard to implement. Certainly easier than TF2 hats.

I think I'm being misunderstood, here. I'm not asking for games to be numerically titled from 1 to 5 billion, but some sort of effort should be made for specific series to make chronological sense when the buzz fades from memory and all you're left with is boxes. Zelda's a perfect example of wtfness.

Thanks for hijacking my thread, mod

In related news, Rebirth makes perfect chronological sense, seeing that after 1,2,3 the universe suffered from a cataclysmic event after which it is reborn.

Sorry for the perceived hijack and all, but I should be able to criticize a game's title in the game's thread.

it is not X4. It has the same basic mechanics, but a different universe
In related news, Rebirth makes perfect chronological sense, seeing that after 1,2,3 the universe suffered from a cataclysmic event after which it is reborn.
So it's 'X4'. I can imagine ahead of time opening the game's folder and seeing 'x4.exe.'

The first game in the series since X3: Terran Conflict  launched in 2008, Deep Silver says that X Rebirth is "more than just an additional chapter"; it is a "fresh beginning" for the series with a number of innovations that will not compromise the franchise's origins.
Star Trek rebooted too, but everyone (e: well, at least nerds) called it 'Star Trek 11.'

==============

That said, if it helps, I've stated that I too look forward to the game's release. X is a great time-sapping series. I'd love to go snatch tons of media and other tidbits to post here, but I wouldn't want to steal anyone's thunder.

Feel free to add whatever media you can get. The official site hasn´t got much on as of today. Three screenies, concept art and the reveal vid.

I´m really curious how they are going to make the starting phase more accessible. According to the devs, they had so much features and innovations (especially for those aspects) that it made no sense to upgrade on the previous titles like they did with X3.
Which was more convenient to use than it´s predecessors, sure, but still a massive brickwall with spikes, turrets and a moat with flaming lava to get into.

A Hearts of Iron 3 approach (without the crashes, of course) would be great. Allow the player to automate just about any aspect of the game he wants. I really wish I could run that game rather than HoI2 and its engine spinoffs, because the military AI that you can turn on at various levels of command saves a TON of time. In HoI 3, no longer do you have to spend minutes and minutes shuffling dozens of individual divisions around your fronts, but as far as I know you still have to manage amphibious and paratrooper operations.

So yeah, that and a clear, concise wiki to go along with it would be awesome.

According to the forums, the biggest wish from the community was to get more direction in the beginning, having your hand held kinda. I could see some tutorial style mission with a wingman maybe that leads up to you´re first factory. That would be cool.
And of course the automatation would help lots. X3 had some mods that went into that direction, at least for the production and selling of your product that helped quite a lot.
