New cars are gonna be released soon. Ferrari are going to launch their car on Friday. They're calling it the F-150, to honour 150th anniversary of the Italian Unification. But really everyone (mostly Yanks) is only going to think one thing:

Most of the hard/new work is under the carbon fibre. Like the suspension, KERS and the adjustable rear wing. That front wing is old. The aero isn't that developed, but that should change quite alot in Bahrain. They've built a solid platform for the season, they did that with the F10 too.

They probably are relying on innovations around the mechanical areas to beat Red Bull, cos with Newey they're gonna be big time dominant in aerodynamics.

Those side pods inlets and the nose is much higher. The car's high in general. Cue even more Ford Pickup jokes

More cars launched today:

Allegedly this car has a novel exhaust system that routes forward instead of rearward, energising more airflow under the car (thus giving more downforce from the ground effects)

And of course, the new McLaren...

...The car features a number of intriguing aerodynamic design innovations.

The bodywork is extensively sculpted and there is a novel engine cover design, featuring two air inlets, and the front wing features a series of very dramatic shapes.

The air intake on the sidepods - the bodywork that sticks out either side of the driver - is also a shape never seen in F1 before, double the height on the outside of the car than it is where the intake meets the cockpit beside the driver.

McLaren said the L-shaped sidepod front was an attempt to get more airflow to the rear wing, thereby increasing aerodynamic downforce.
The second air intake is to aid cooling of the gearbox and hydraulics, according to director of engineering Tim Goss, at a time when McLaren have packaged the car as tightly as possible for optimum aerodynamic performance.

Sidepods are funky, but there's nothing much else unusual about the car. I think Williams and Renault have the most amazing things on their car. Renaults forward exhausts and Williams invisible gearbox is mental

At one stage his hand was looking like it had to be amputated, it was pretty rough from what they said. They managed to restore the blood flow and reconstruct his hand, but the recovery will take about a year if everything goes to plan. Whether he'll ever drive in F1 again, though...

Bahrain GP has been cancelled. It's a good thing for many reasons, F1 shouldn't be effectively condoning the governments actions by playing host to a race so shortly after/during these protests. The circuit itself is terrible. And Australia should always be the traditional kickoff for the F1 season.

The protesters weren't too happy with the Bahraini government wasting so much money on the GP anyway. The country has nil involvement in F1 or motorsports, the fanbase is probably tiny. Never made sense to race there, but it should be back on for 2012 barring a huge uprising and the people destroying the track as a symbol of the excess and vanity of the former regime.

Australia should be the "traditional" season finale...

Not really, Australia have actually hosted the event in the opening slot more times than it has the finale. Australia was the finale from 85-95 (11 seasons). It was the opener from 96-2009 (except 2006, so that's 13 seasons) and now will be again for 2011.

Just because something happened a shitlong time ago does not make it tradition.

It became part of the Formula One World Championship in 1985 and was held at the Adelaide Street Circuit in Adelaide, South Australia from that year to 1995, before moving to Melbourne in 1996.

The Australian Grand Prix is the second round of the Championship, having been the first race of each year, excluding 2006 and 2010, since the event moved to Melbourne. During its years in Adelaide, the Australian Grand Prix was the final round of the Championship, replacing the Portuguese Grand Prix in that respect. As the final round of the season

Is there a reason the 2011 schedule hasn't been posted yet?  Kind of nice to see that Yas Marina circuit is 2nd to last and Brazil is the final circuit.  Hopefully the final race won't be so damn boring.

Surprised that no one has commented, but Melbourne tomorrow...Vettel qualifying 7 odd tenths of a second higher than everyone else.  I really, really don't like the guy.  Mid pack squabbles will be interesting.

That show from Vettel really put the rest of the cars in their place. A bit embarrassing for McLaren and Ferrari.

I'd love to see another Aussie champion, but that kids got talent and confidence to burn and car to go with it.

I honestly don't think so. Vettel is a good driver, but not a good racer. He gets pole, he does great - he gets anywhere else and fucks up royally trying to defend and attack and overtake (as we saw last season). He cannot cope with pressure of rivals on his ass or infront of him, but he's fantastic when at the front. Red Bull just have to hope that Ferrari and McLaren don't catch up on pace.

Sad I missed the first race... Kinda mad Vettel is already kicking ass, but as Zimmer said he's really bad under pressure.  It's cool that Vitaly got 3rd though, nice seeing some of the middle guys getting podium.
