Now I personally am past caring about the acquiring of new ones, the novelty has worn off and as I said, new ones are bad.
But yes, I occasionally join idle servers, and this is because what I DO like collecting is all the new weapons, and the crafting price gets higher and higher as time goes on, so to make sure I can get new weapons I need a good pile of metal. Hence idling. I was able to get the new Medic and Demoman items straight away when they were released because of my metal.
I'm not kidding myself about anything. Promo hats look bad, newer hats look bad, the old ones mostly don't. I don't care about getting new ones but like the ones I have.
Edit: to stay on topic I'll add that none of todays deals interest me.
