This is a true story and call to action;
I live near Joshua Tree California, home to the 29 Palms marine base. We were at a cafe in town and I noticed two marines having coffee.  I discreetly got their bill. I was my way of  quietly saying thank you. The Marines stationed there have lost a higher ratio of men than any other branch of the service.

     Many of us playing battlefield do so because we are military buffs. Take a moment, send a package, write a letter.  It will make you feel good inside. Go to a air show if your lucky enough to have one near you. You get to meet and talk to the real warriors.

I lived off of carepackages from random strangers in the states when I was iraq, it really meant a whole lot knowing that people I would probably never meet or talk to were spending money out of their pockets to make my life a little more comfortable

I'm really no fan of the military, and I'll reserve my opinions on why people go into the military, but if I ever had the opportunity you did to pick up their tab, I would. While I don't agree with their decision to join the Military and never would myself, don't agree with the war they are fighting and the people that command their actions, I do have an un-ending appreciation for what they do. It's a dirty job, someone has to do it, and they are  bigger men for it than I am.

I think you have the right idea, Torin. I think even if people dont' support the war, or Bush, or homosexuals; if you're here, you should be doing your best to support the men that are fighting for you. Not protesting outside funeral homes or the white house because you son got shot. It happens, no one likes it, we're sorry. But it was their choice to join and for giving their lives for us we owe them.

Nice thread. I used adoptaplatoon.org a few years ago. I still keep in touch with the person I met through it. We actually ended up here at Bragg together.

After the event at the coffee shop I contacted the public relations officer at 29 palms about donating my bands services for a free show. The were receptive about the idea but it never took wings. They were kind of in disbelief that a member of the public was calling trying to do something for the troops.
     Lets take it a step farther; with all the vets and supporters that use this site banded together we could make a big difference.
     Lets start an official bf2s adopt a battalion brigade.
     An account could be started (  financial admin services donated by chuy perhaps ) with the goal to be to provide outgoing battalions with frequently requested items BEFORE they leave. I will donate a domain name and website to the cause.
    Cmon peeps, lets form squads and get it done.

I'd like to steal an idea i saw in a different thread, and suggest that we do something similar to Relay for life, or an AIDS walk and raise money for a period of non stop gaming, maybe even set up places where we can congragate to play be it servers dedicated to this or locations across the country, and use any money raised to benifit troops.  We can either take cash, or gift donations to send to troops.

+1, this is such a great idea! I did it when I was in Boy Scouts (yes I was) and it was really nice to know that a soldier got food and common things we take for granted over here.

Just dont send chocolate (crap melts before we got it), or any thing bottled or in cheap packaging (imperfect shipping handling).  I can't count how many times I had to sadly toss out some good food/products.  Oh yah, if you send a flask, please fill it before hand.

It was always appreciated when people send stuff.

I'm not trying to slam you or anything, but why would you be against someone's decision to join the military? Isn't it an honorable enough profession for you? Volunteers prevent draft.

I absolutely support this initiative.

However I seriously doubt I would ever be permitted to withdraw money for this - at first glance very frivolous - program.

If someone wants to join the military - good for them. We need a military, even if there aren't any wars! There's always a decent share of disasters to keep the ADF busy.

A decision to join the military is a decision to support the president's military decisions, which is what I don't agree with. I'm not saying being in the military in not an honorable profession, I'm not saying serving and protecting your country is not idealistically a good thing to do, it is just simply that I disagree with how the current administration is using (or abusing) the military, and don't support that.  I support the troops brave enough to train and go risk their lives in Iraq, they are better than I, but I do not support personally making a career move such as joining the military as it inevitably supports what I feel are improper motives behind the use of our country's military forces.

I am not against someone's decision to join the military, I merely disagree with it. I have all the respect in the world for our troops, but I disdain the administration in charge of them.

Were our country using its military forces for a reason I support, I would have no qualms with joining the military, much less anyone else. That's really all it boils down to. Nothing against the troops, everything against the administration.

This is somewhat contradictory. You're not against people joining the military, but you disagree with it? You think it's an honorable profession, but you abhor them willingly submitting their lives to the decisions of whatever administration is in charge? And another point...what if someone joined the military before a particular president's term, or has plans on joining after? Are you still against this decision?

You really can't have it both ways.

Yes, I disagree, as in I wouldn't do it.

I think the profession is honorable, but would not do it myself, for the stated reasons. I don't abhor anything, well, other than the administration. I wouldn't submit my lives to the administration's decisions, but to each their own. I disagree in that I wouldn't do it myself, but I make no judgement of other people's decisions.

If they agree with the administration, agree with the war, or are willing to risk joining before/after a particular administration, that is their decision to make. I pass no judgement on their decision, my only commentary is that it wouldn't be my decision. I personally wouldn't risk it. If however a new administration came in, had military plans that I agreed with, I would have no personal qualms with serving. To serve however is not a goal in my life, I believe I can benefit the country in other ways, but if I had to, I would have no qualms. I just wouldn't want to be stuck in a military service under an administration I felt was abusing the loyalty to my country and willingness to submit my life to it.

You are incorrect on this one.  A decision to join the military is a decision to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, and to obey the orders of the officers appointed above you.  It is not a political decision, it is a personal one.

I was in the army for 12 years, and during that time I was deployed to Somalia, Haiti, and Iraq.  Each one of those conflics was one that I thought the US would have been better off staying out of.  Nevertheless, I went, and I did my job to the best of my ability.  Why?  Because that is what I swore to do.

The Military does not exist to make policy, or to validate policy; it is a tool used in the execution of policy.  As the old line goes, "We are here to preserve democracy, not to practice it."  By serving in the military during a time of conflict, you are not validating your President's policies, you are expressing your love of country.  I did not render my service for the President or his agenda, I did it for the soldier beside me, and so that the people I loved at home wouldn't have to.
