My niece has an interesting school project. She is to pick the natural disaster that she considers the most powerful, and do a report and slideshow detailing a recent occurrence of the event. I thought it was a pretty interesting subject...

By most powerful, the teacher is implying pure destructive force, cost of property damage, and potential for greatest human loss. Personally, I find tornadoes to be the most kickass, just because of how they look. They probably aren't the most destructive, though. Anyone seen or lived through a truly awe inspiring disaster?

Wildfires are pretty awe-inspiring when you see them in person, especially the forest fires that send up massive plumes of smoke, but their destructive potential hardly qualifies them for the list.

all im saying is, natural disasters are caused by a complex series of factors that combine to form conditions for the perfect disaster

earthquakes... tectonic plates, thermal pressure and immense amounts of friction... snap movements
tornadoes... high pressure and low pressure cyclones... tunnel forms
9/11... being nasty and evil people to muslims for much of the later half of the 20th century... skyscrapers fall

The Yellowstone Caldera and La Garita Caldera are interesting examples of 'supervolcanos'.

Events that have launched 2500km³ to 5000km³ of rock into the atmosphere, wiped out 60% of the human race, and changed the climate of the planet.

Rather impressive when an incidental fragment of such an eruption can launch a rock the size of a hill over 50km from the eruption site. That means that rock was thrown at least 50km (164,000 feet) up into the atmosphere, before coming back down. Don't recall the name of it, but it is a 'hill' on the way into Sunlight Basin, Custer National Forest & Yellowstone Park. Big old granite rock 'hill' laying upside down (geologically) on top of a sedimentary hillside.

If it were indeed possible to predict the timings of the Yellowstone volcano eruptions I can't think of a better way to go out and cease to exist.

tsunamis or EQs are probably the most devastating, i'm most impressed by tsunamis though
