Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me

amen to that. love it when the no-life fags hop on a lovely opportunity to quote-train ream one another.Dauntless wrote:

and to you fags jumping on the quote pyramid, of course you can tell the difference, it's like saying i can't tell the difference between a texan and new yorker accent because i'm not from america
go fuck yourself
You know that difference because of stereotypical images and popular culture. The average American can optimistically tell a Scot from a Londoner, but I'm unsure about anything closer like a Geordie or Yorkshire accent. When we're exposed to Britons, they don't go "I'm from Birmingham and my accent is representative of that area." and there's not a saturation of British folk and language we get exposed to over here. If two folks from the UK sound different to me, I usually chalk it up to more a difference in their voice than a difference in accent.Dauntless wrote:

stop being a typical uzique and whining about nothing! the americans know better than you about your own nation's accents and dialects...Dauntless wrote:

i don't care what you "chalk it up to" or how you know that difference, you can still tell the difference, and steven merchant is from bristol and has an annoying voice due to his accent
You're telling me you can honestly see no difference between a geordie and a scouser?DesertFox- wrote:
Do some googling and find that it's purely a UK phenomenon that you can tell the difference. No one ever claimed to know better than you, and only claimed that to us, they sound quite similar (how it sounds to foreigners is something we'd know more about than you folks).
"I'm English and whenever I meet another English person for the first time you can tell where they're from almost down to the town after a few sentences, like I'm from Lancashire and you can tell what town someones from I.E. Wigan, Bolton, Southport by there accent even though they're only miles apart."
"For the Brits out there- if you hear a fellow Brit talk, can you tell where he is from in the first 10 seconds? And how close can you get? 10 miles?"
It's something residents of the UK do, whereas the rest of the world is satisfied with "Oh, he has a British accent."
well, unlike america, where the 'accents' are fairly monoglossic and same-same (despite regional inflections)- england has a vast history of philological, linguistic and lyrical tradition. our language and native-speakers are a european mish-mash of historical influences; literally a melting-pot of european languages and regional dialects. a dialect is very different to a mere accentual inflection-- so when you go 'up norf' and look at, say, scousers (liverpool), mancunians (manchester) and geordies (newcastle)- and then compare it to, say, cockney (london district)-- you're basically listening to 4 distinctly different languages. i can barely understand what a hardcore geordie is saying and he's speaking the same language. he may as well be speaking to dutch, for all i can understand. that is why the decision to cast a bristolian, west-country bumpkin as a voice-actor in portal 2 seems like such a non-issue to you americans. leave it to us... we understand. if you were valve and you were looking for a 'token' british voice, you'd go to london or a southern home-county speaker. 'queen's english' and all that. a much better stereotype.RTHKI wrote:

Me too. I don't particularly want anyone talking to me the whole time, let alone that guy.mtb0minime wrote:
Portal was fun because you were all alone and the only interactive social experiences you had were with an evil sadistic robot. I liked that.
