Call of Duty: World at War Dog Guide (And COD4-5 SP Guides)

In the online multiplayer, dogs can be your greatest asset or biggest nuisance. Serving as Mans Best Friend/Cute furry homing missile with fangs and teeth, calling in the dogs can win you the game, plus they allow you to acquire huge killstreaks. Below are strategies to help you to utilize the dogs to their maximum effectiveness, and also guides on how to fight off enemy dogs.

Friendly Dog Pack:
When you or a teammate calls in the dogs, they will always appear as standard brown shepherds, no matter which country you’re fighting for. These are the friendly dogs. When your team calls them in, your enemy always receives notification.

Now, the first thing you should do, if you can, is find a dog near you. Since the dogs have a great sense of smell, they only need to pause for a few seconds before they pick up a scent. When they do, follow them. Since the dogs run carelessly and don’t try to conceal themselves, you should try not to be to obvious when you’re following one. Make sure that you’re armed with a semi-automatic rifle, LMG, or any other weapon with good range and semi-automatic/full automatic firing. In other words, grab a multi-role weapon. Now, when an enemy sees the dog coming, he will probably train his sights on it. This is why the dogs are so deadly. They serve as a physical and psychological warfare tool. When the enemies here barking, they will immediately begin to look for nearby dogs. They also will occasionally realize that an enemy soldier could be nearby, as well. This is how the dogs keep enemies distracted. The enemy will fire at the dog. When he does, open fire and take him out! When following a dog and the dogs target gets killed, stop. The dog will slow down as soon as it realizes its intended victim was killed. However, it will slow down by going low, dragging its feet, and whipping its head toward its next target before it charges. When a dog slows down, stop and watch where it points its head. Run in that direction right away, the dog will catch up with you. Since you only get dogs for one minute, implementing this strategy lets you waste as little time as possible. Since dogs have collars, and since they bark, your enemies will probably spot the dog before you spot them. Remember, though, to prioritize. If there is an enemy sniper, for example, on the Seelow railway bridge, don’t dash out to follow your dogs going after the sniper. A sniper rifle is a pure anti-infantry weapon, and the enemy sharpshooter would much rather get 5/10 XP for killing you, depending on the game mode, then he would risk dying by trying to snipe a dog for an insignificant 3 XP. Dogs are very effective against enemy snipers. However, martyrdom, SMG’s, and bouncing betty’s will severely decrease the overall effectiveness of your dogs, so be sure to help them out.

Hostile Dog Pack:
When a hostile gets a kill streak of seven and calls in the dogs, get ready for a vicious fight. Enemy dogs will always be pure black. The type of breed is unclear, but they look slightly like a german-shepherd/wolf crossbreed.

Hostile dogs are incredibly dangerous, especially because they distract you and force you to abruptly change tactics. Now, you will be concentrating on fighting off the dogs and fighting off enemy soldiers. Enemy soldiers should be the priority. If you spot an enemy running with the dogs, kill him first. However, if it is a domination game mode and the enemy is utilizing dogs, go for the dogs. The reason being, the dogs will still award you with three XP. Two or more dogs will provide more XP than a single human. If you can, take them all out, but remember, never turn your back. Since dogs like to jump and are quite good at it, use cover that is too high up for them to reach. The two best maps to be on if the enemy calls in the dogs are Makin island (NOT MAKIN DAY) and Seelow. The Seelow Bridge grants you excellent visibility, allowing you to pick off dogs at leisure. The grain silo’s and guard towers are only ladder accessible, meaning that no dogs can get you there. Also, the wide open spaces allow you to see the dogs first. Just don’t get caught in the sewer pipes or wheat fields. That can be a death trap, since you have low visibility all around in either of those areas, and because you can’t turn around quickly in the sewer pipe. Makin island is also great, as long as you are in the water and not the forest. The dogs will not come in the ocean, so you should be safe. However, if there are no nearby targets closer than you, the dogs will hang out on the shoreline and bark. Do not go to shore, you can get mangled. So, take out your weapon and euthanize those dogs from range. However, 3 or four dogs barking loundly and jumping while you shoot at them plus a few dog carcasses litter the ground nearby is like setting up a large neon sign saying “I am Here, come shoot me”. So, get ready to run and engage enemies who come to get you. Being armed with a sniper is not good, so whip out your pistol. Hopefully, you’ve already unlocked the .358 Magnum. In this case, especially if you have stopping power, you can blast the dogs. However, if you have any other pistol equipped, you really should also have stopping power. Enemy dogs are fast and hard to hit. The good thing about the pistols is that they reload much quicker than the magnum. Unfortunately, they do not have great damage. However, their firing speeds are quicker than the speeds the magnum fires at, and with less recoil.

Neutral Dog Pack: Only encountered in cod4, in certain missions. To avoid them, just give them a wide berth, and do not shoot. Otherwise, they can bring a pack with them. However, the ones in the pool in Pripyat should pose no threat.

Single player: This works for COD4 and 5.

When a dog comes at you, take it down. Enemy AI should not pose much threat, unless you are playing in veteran. COD4 and 5 have pretty easy veteran modes, so you should be OK. The dogs are no deadlier in Veteran mode than they are in Recruit mode. When comes at you, wait until interactive-cut-scene begins. As soon as they lunge for you, if you are on a PC, tap V. If on a PS3, press R3. If on an XBOX, press the knife button. Than, you should break its neck. However, if there is more than one, hilariously enough, they will wait in line for their turn get their neck snapped. When not sure whether a dog will leap out from nearby, equip an automatic weapon, especially an SMG, if possible. For dog killing, rate of fire is more important than damage, since the dogs have a low health. A Skorpion, MP5, P-90 (cod4), Thompson, or PPSH, or even a type 100 (COD5) should do fine. The reason you should avoid using an MP-40 or another slow firing SMG is because although their damage more than compensates for their rate of fire, they will not fire quickly enough to kill a dog that catches you by surprise.
