Just wondering what everyone thinks about the oil/gas issue in the U.S.  Here are some links to start off:

Unfortunately the price issues just aren't in the US.  With India, and especially China, becoming far more industrialized, they are creating massive demand for oil.  When demand is high and supplies are low or limited, prices go up.  Let's not forget that unrest in the Middle East has a tendency to do this as well, such as the recent rangling with Iran over their nuclear program.

Also realize that there hasn't been a new oil refinery built in the US for ~15 years.  As such we lack refining capacity and must import much of our gasoline already refined, which adds cost to the final product at the pumps.

I know its not just in the U.S., but I wanted the topic to be US in general, not other countries.

But you can't separate the rising gas prices in the US from international situations that affect world oil prices.

As for the actual pricing here in the US, I would say we have been lucky for a long time.  Our prices have been cheap compared to other places in the world.  I think it is because of this that we have constantly seen larger, more powerful vehicles, with poor gas mileage, roll out of auto manufacturers for the US market.  The time has come that we are going to have to change our thinking about that, not only from an economic standpoint, but a political one as well.

In my opinion we need to remove any tax incentives from oil companies that aren't associated with building additional refining capacity and researching alternative fuel sources; this would also require the Feds to put a leash on the hard core environmentalists.  Don't get me wrong, I think use/harvesting of resources needs to be done responsibly, and we can't just allow pollution to rum rampant, but we can't just shut down all resource production and use.

We also need to increase gas guzzler taxes, and offer incentives to auto makers for increasing their mileage and expanding their lines of hybrid and E85 vehicles.  The tax incentives also need to be passed along to the buyers of these vehicles; more than they are now.  For diesel we need to expand bi-diesel.  Right now we have excess farming capacity, and even pay farmers to keep land out of production to artificially keep prices up.  We could remove these farm subsidies and have farmers start groing crops to be used for the production of bi-diesel and ethanol for E85 vehicles.

I agree international relations affects global gas prices, but I don't want to hear how unrest in the Mid-East affects gas prices....thats common knowledge, no?  I want to hear what we can do as a country to stop the demand of oil HERE (basically how we can wean ourselves off of oil).  Basically, I don't want this to turn into an international relations class, but a discussion of practical ways we as a nation can get off the oil.  For instance, the ideas you offer in your second and third paragraphs in the post above.  Keep going all.

Another thing we need to do is offer more high occupancy lanes.  If you carpool, you get the advantage of dealing with less traffic.  They could also offer reduced fees at toll roads for hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.

I have an outlandish, amazing idea.

What if we had robots working at our offices and stuff - and we controlled them from home using virtual reality machines.

It's possible - they've made a steel cage which you can run in and your actually running through the video game!

I said it was outlandish.

Hmm, might be simpler for everyone work from home via the internet, which would pretty much eliminate the need for commuting.  But it'll put all the catering staff, cleaners, security and office goods suppliers out of business.

I do get a kick out of the major oil companies posting record profits, and how they crank gas prices on 'fears of...', 'concern for...', or 'speculation of...'.  Way to f#%* the working man!
