RIB Tactics

RIB’s are great for quick, inconspicuous insertions They’re also great for depressed stockbrokers. These are floating deathtraps. Partly because of their low armour, but mainly because they do a great Titanic re-enactment when exploding. The following is a guide on how to properly use an RIB, and how to stay alive. However, of all the targets a bomber pilot can choose from, RIB’s are usually last on the list. RIB’s sound tasty.

Also, below there is a list of tactics, insertion strategies, flanking, a list of RIB no-go maps, and some other information too. Some information applies to jet ski’s as well.

The Jet Ski Layout

1 seat
Located in middle
Small size, decent speed.

The RIB layout

Rapid Inflatable Boat:
6 Seats in all
1 Driver Seat, located in stern
1 Bipod mounted M249 SAW position, located in bow.
Four passenger seats, 2 fore, 2 aft.
Armour: It’s a giant floating balloon. Your best hope is that enemy bullets deflect off the M249.
Handling: Decent enough for it’s size.
Saftey Features: Hahahahahahaha… Oh wait. Your serious.
Where are the seatbelts on this thing?
Where’s the airbag? Oh wait. It is the airbag.
We’re gonna die.

Practical usage: You should really only use the RIB for one way trips. Ferrying and shuttling troops should be one way too, because RIB’s are quite weak. Once you arrive at your destination, plop a grenade in the RIB, and then charge!

Worst case scenario survival: The worst case scenario for an RIB is, (Yes, I know Everything, because it’s weak, but this is worse than a nearby APC or single jet) when you run into a re-enactment of the Normandy beach landing. If you storm a shore defended by heavy tanks, machine gun fire, helicopter strafing, and APC’s, you will not survive. But, you can actually still save yourself. When coming in to a dangerous situation, always turn right back around, and when out of sight of the immediate shoreline, drive the RIB to an undefended stretch of shore. Then destroy it, and storm the shore.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carriers “Enemy boat spotted”/Across stretches of open water: Since, in many carrier missions the carrier is one of the only USMC spawn points, lots of people will be needing transport. You should always try to get someone in the gunners seat, and a bunch of passengers, because this gives you the best protection. The primary threat for RIB crews will be aircraft. Often, jets will approach from a 45 degree angle, flying at you. They prefer to come from the sun. If an enemy jet Is coming, everyone should get out of the boat. Not only will this save your life, but it can sometimes make the enemy think that there was no one in the boat in the first place. It’s a slim chance, but it’s a chance. If a helicopter attacks you, open fire. Try to get to shore as quick as possible because a helicopter, because it flies slower and has more ground attack weapons, will spot you, target you, and take you out. Now, for a special case. If an enemy RIB or transport helicopter is heading for your carrier, turn around and take it out. It can become a nuisance to any ground troops without protection. Also, Jet Ski’s should be taken care of too. Since you are on open water, you should be able to spot slow moving APC’s from far away, and avoid them. If the carrier or base you came from is under siege, than you should always use a strategy of flanking. Study the direction that the enemy troops are coming from, then take a route that goes around them. Even if this involves going behind your carrier, or another long route, it takes longer if you get shot and have to respawn . If there is a battle right infront of your base or carrier, or in it, stay on the outskirts of the battle, and shoot only as covering fire. The most important rule to surviving is to never cut speed. EVER.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Rivers: The most dangerous rivers are the ones in heavy forests, which are the Chinese maps. However, the most dangerous river’s in the whole game are the one in FuShe, and the Shonghua River, guess which map that is. The FuShe river is dangerous because of the canyon, which allows enemies to see you from great distances, and target you, and because the big gap under the dam, where you have to get around bridges and obstacles. However, the Shonghua river is the most dangerous of all. Try seeing past the tall grass, thick bamboo, and convenient fog. Now, always have a gunner in river maps, because he can shoot in the foliage and take out enemies waiting in ambush. Also, many enemies cut across the rivers and through the forests, and sometimes will spot you passing through. Never stop moving, even when targeting enemies. Also, APC’s serve as mobile dams. With guns. And armor. They will cut you down. In maps like Dragon Valley, the only cover for enemies to hide behind on the shore are very obvious, like rocks and hills and buildings. You shouldn’t see anything deadlier than the odd sniper firing on one of your bases. However, you will see a lot of transport vehicles alongside the river. Tanks will be inland fighting near the bases, but lots of AA vehicles and aircraft are patrolling the river.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Landing: If you land the boat on the shore of a river with many trees and cover, everyone should get out of the boat and swim to the shore. If you are storming an open beach, and not a riverbank, you should always have someone in the boat to fire along the shoreline and cover you until the area is clear. Although you might think that, if the shore is clear, you should just all abandon the boat and storm the shore. But, smart enemies hide in cover near shores, and they won’t let you see them. Also, many people routinely patrol the beaches manually with vehicles, or with UAV’s.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
River Landing: Since river banks are elevated, everyone should get out of the boat, unless you are near a small hill swarming with enemies. In that case, strafe it with the machine gun. However, Shonghua is a real nuisance if you try to land on it’s banks. Much of the bamboo grows in the narrow river, narrowing it even more.
Shallow water: Shallow water is a great place to pick up and drop people off. In certain maps, fighting can escalate in to different zones that are in a close proximity to each other. Using shallow water, you can ferry troops to one point of a river, and then come back for another load. This is a great time saver. However, shallow water is used for crossing by infantry, and infantry might decide to take a shot at you, so be careful.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sewer Sneak Attacks: These are probably the most effective types of insertions possible with an RIB. Although I’ve made a few thousand cracks about RIB’s in the past, they are definitely fast, inconspicuous, armed, and can carry quite a few guys. Now, in certain maps, like Dalian, FuShe, and Clean Sweep, there are special concrete structures located near important control points and outposts. On the top, they are a cement platform with a u-shaped building on it and one window facing a sewer entrance. The sewer entrance has a ladder going down it. Below are special tunnels which can be accessed by RIB and the used to sneak into an enemy’s base without them knowing. Then, you can call artillery, wait in the sewers, and come out when it’s safe.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bridge tips: When boating near a bridge, keep in mind that, depending on how the game is going for each team, bridges can be shields or platforms from which enemies can take potshots at you.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surviving head on attack heli Passovers: When an attack heli locates you, and has no gunner, there is a chance you can survive. First, point the point so that, when he begins to fly towards you, it points towards him. The minute he fires his rockets, back up. Then, hit the throttle and go right under him as he passes by. As he turns around to re-target you, go backwards again and  keep going in your original direction, or to land. This buys you about 7 seconds of time to get away before he can accurately target you again.
No-Go Maps
This is a list of maps that you should not attempt to use an RIB on. Not just dangerous areas, whole maps. This advie mainly applies to large maps, but it can apply to the 16 player versions too.

Dragon Valley- Every road is long and can get you to a point very far away. All the rivers travel beside roads, and there is just too much vehicle and air traffic. Use RIB’s only for a short, 150 meter or less distance. The only things you should be safe from are tanks, which fight in the south of the map mainly.

Iron Gator: Even for short distances, RIB’s are dangerous. Since the carrier itself is the only place people travel to, it is a deathtrap. Even when you are behind friendly lines, enemy transport heli’s come from up high and swoop down, and as every bf2 veteran knows, heli door gunners shoot anything that moves. Hell, scratch that. They shoot anything. They don’t even aim sometimes!

Sharqi Peninsula: In every game on this map, there will always be one attack heli, two HMMWV’s, and several snipers and AT’s on the island firing at MEC troops. Even if you can get passed these dangers, you can’t land until you pass the hill the TV station is located on. Even if you land by there, a tank and HMMWV spawnpoint is located right there, meaning you boated there for nothing. You will get overrun.

RIB-Friendly maps: Zatar is almost completely safe, I have never been killed in an RIB here, because of the protecting cliffs, and RIB’s can safely take you even to the enemies carrier/MEC Base. Oman is safe too, because the bombers will go for the control points and main enemy lines, and heli’s are shot down before they get too deep in enemy territory. Operation Clean Sweep isn’t to dangerous either, as long as you don’t full-on storm any control points. If you stay away from a control point or bridge, you should be safe. Dalian Plant should be safe too, because it’s so big, enemies will only run into you by accident, and the large amounts of troops storming control points are a more valid target than someone on a fishing trip. Seriously. RIB drivers, it’s carp season! Wake Island is also friendly towards RIB drivers because, due to the layout of the island, enemies will have a very difficult breaching your lines, and you can drive your RIB far from shore, but still be able to target and kill enemy infantry with the SAW.

RIBS should not be used unless it's the FuShe boat race. Damn, we need to do another one of those events (despite the fact that about 50% of the orig members would have to reinstall BF2

A boat guide should have a how to "pop a wheelie."  This is the best (and most fun) way to use the boat.
