btw, speaking of steelies, i was reading up on malibu creek out of interest (it's closed to protect the native steelhead runs, shit didn't even know they were out here but they're actually in a lot of the coastal creeks and shit apparently) and came across a story of a dude that caught steelhead out of the LA river, lol.

so i've heard, i wanna do some proper big fish fishing lol. targeting big salmon or steelhead, ya know?

btw i'm thinking about getting a decent fly fishing setup. just reading up a lot atm, figure i can get a nice little 3wt rod and a reel for $75 (read reviews, decent i guess, and i'd replace the fly line with something nice though)

it's all online now days. DFG website then you print it out and like a couple weeks later they send your actual fishing license. can get a day pass, etc, annual, etc.

Yeah, just try pier fishing first. Pack for a whole day outing. Get in real early to get the good spots. Learn patience the easy way. Just get a small flexible rod for good undercasting. And "cheat" using some sabiki.

Pier fishing doesn't require permits. Started my kids into fishing at 4 years old.
