I'm stoked for the Olympics there is definitely a lot of interesting stuff going on during the next 2 and a half weeks around here. It's going to be party central downtown, and all colleges/universities are shut down during the Olympics

i can tell you, the 2002 Olympics were awesome! the only thing that really sucked was getting tickets to see hockey.

Ahah yes, quite sad, that the one Canadian city that is hosting the "winter" olympics is the only Canadian City that hasn't seen any snow this winter.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada, February 9, 2010 (ENS) - With the 2010 Winter Olympic Games opening on Friday in Vancouver, the warmer than usual weather of an El Nino winter is causing headaches for Olympic organizers.

While the slopes at Whistler Mountain, where the Alpine and Nordic events will be held, are covered with deep snow, the lower elevation Cypress Mountain venues are not.

Snow is being trucked in and flown in to Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver to get the Olympic venue ready for the first event - the women's moguls. Qualifying races are scheduled for Saturday morning, with the finals set for later in the day.

Snow-making operations are running around the clock due to the unusually warm weather. Workers have been trucking down snow from higher elevations and are using straw bales as foundational elements for the ski cross and snowboard cross events. Snow will be piled on to cover up the straw.

They'll make it look good for the TV though I'm sure.

We have gotten 1 cm of snow this year at my house, in which, compared to last winter.....

I hear the worlds greatest band, Rush will be in the opening show.

So, does the snow situation prove or disprove global warming?

Of anything.

TV's only used to watch movies.

Why would I need cable when I have the internet?

I need to talk with my boss about work hours during important hockey game days. Apparently many games are played at 7:00, so if I get to work at 9:30 I can start my day with some Olympic Hockey.

Damn you timezones!
I need around tree fiddy.

I've always thought of winter sports as a rich mans/elitists sort of thing. I'll keep an eye on this, maybe.

I find the Winter Olympics to be more fun and entertaining sports while the Summer Olympics are more strict, disciplined sports.  Both are great in their own way.

I hate sports that require too much specialisation and aren't really connected to reality in any way. Skiing, I don't have any mountains near me and I'm not paying hundreds of pounds all the time to do it. Ice Hockey requires a special rink and perfect surfaces and shit. Let's not even bother talking about Luge and Bobsled and shit. How do people even get involved in this stuff.

I've never come across anyone saying "hey, do you want to try bobsled or curling and become pro at it" how the FUCK do people get involved in this?

That's what pisses me off the most in some sports, having no idea how people even got there in the first place. At least with football, tennis, cricket or even motorsport, you know how it all works. You can't do this shit at school. It's not accessible to the vast majority of the world. That's why I see it as an elitist sport or rich kids who get daddy to pay for their ski holidays and all that shit. Fuck that.

Well you're really missing out on most of the awesome winter sports.  People that live in a colder country can easily do most of these things.  I have 3 or 4 ski hills within 30 mins of where I live.  There are like 10 hockey rinks in my small town. Theres a massive canal where people go skating all the time and play pond hockey, etc.  My brother did curling for a few years, I even tried it once.  I'd love to try bobsled and the other winter sports.

Just because you cant do it doesnt mean nobody else can.  We have access to all this stuff at school.  Stuff like curling or hockey doesnt require rich kids, you need a stick and skates to practice hockey or shoes, a rock and brooms for curling.
