Today at My schools MUN this was the situation/ breaking news

The Iranians captured US special forces and killed them on the al jazeera TV station (AKA bbc arabic) and the news spreaded to cnn and bbc world. There is what is appeared to be a burnt body who has been ID'd as an US special forces operative. Iran has also shot down an israeli air craft in its airspace.

What do u think will happen? some delegates said "lets start ww3 then" and "hey lets have a nuclear winter!"

well, since there is no formal war between Iran and the USA, Iran could treat any foreign operatives captured on their territory as spies and act accordingly. Wether this would include executing them I don't know. But it is a possible option.

Any israeli jet attacking Iranian soil would be an act of war, and might lead to a real war between Iran and Israel. As both nations would try to rally allies to support them, this could lead to an escalation outside of the middle east.

then i guess the US will mobilize its forces. i forgot to mention they did sumthing bad to the dead body of the us soldier... forgot what it was, starts w/ a d...

heres what some guys said in the MUN meeting

Pakistan Attacks US bases in pakistan, Cuba takes guantanamo bay, UK and US mobilizes its forces from iraq to iran and russia supplies iran w/ military equipment. Nigeria (for sum reason theyre there...) and Iran stops sending oil to the west. Germany remains neutral (i know schuss, its part of the constitution right , no war unless nato or EU approves it ).

Thoughts:
Everyone outside of the middle east will side with the US or take no action at all. Cuba won't do anything, and Nigeria's involvement will probably stay the same - guerrilla's attacking oil facilities with the same frequency that they do now.
Iran is screwed. Their president is crazy - not too often can someone say things along the lines of what he says and not get their ass kicked for it. I'd be surprised if Iran could do anything more substantial than the Palestinians to Israel, or anyone else, for that matter.

I get the impression Iran's pres is crazy enough to use them but I don't think it is likely that they'd get a chance to.

Nobody captured in Iran will be identifiable as an American by anything he carries, and I suspect it would be difficult to capture any such person alive. Certainly, the US will not admit that Americans are operating on Iranian soil.

captured, then tortured then descimated the body in international television. and it was what appear as US Spec ops uniforms...

Um, there's no uniform for a black op. Black op types don't carry anything that can identify them. They can be tortured into confessing it, but it can't be proven otherwise.

Come on now, US Special Ops aren't stupid. There's fiction, and then there's fantasy...

heh why cant ppl just read the top of the thread

i thought the US SF (as in operatives that kills ppl and blows up stuff) does wear a uniform? then if no uniform then check the weapon... sopmod m4a1... i dont mean as spies u know? but ok, an ISRAELI jet was shot down, wouldnt that also be a major factor?

US spec ops have uniforms, but they don't wear them on black ops. Nor do they carry standard issue US weapons on black ops. Spec ops troops are trained to use most weapons in the world. (I believe HKs have been popular on black ops, but mission dictates and, of course, we will never know for sure.)

This is basic SOP for any spec ops guys around the world: A black op isn't very 'black' if you can tell where the guy is from by looking at his kit.

but what would really happen? ww3? a peaceful resolution? i was saying to one of the teachers how about an assasination atempt on the US delegate using a bb gun (come on its school no Rl ) now that would be awsome

If it happened as you outline it (i.e. US troops positively identified and killed), the US would probably suck it up and have a 'sad story' press conference, like the one they had after the failed hostage rescue in 1980 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Eagle_Claw); they'd say they were justified in attempting action, and that would be the end of it. After all, it IS an act of war sending troops to foreign soil, so you can only complain so much if they get caught.

I think, however, that a more likely scenerio is that the troops are captured, tortured into admitting they are Americans, but otherwise, can't be positively identified. The US denies all involvement, claiming it is a set up by Iran to make the US look bad. Story slowly fades to obscurity.

The mission dictates what "uniform" the special ops unit would wear. If they really wanted to go incognito, then wearing US camoflage patterns in the middle of Iran wouldn't be the best way to accomplish anything.

The Army Rangers wore standard desert camoflage in Nothern Iraq when they fought with the Kurds(against the Republican Guard), but at that time they were in actual combat situations. Therefore, they were equipped with US weapons, gear, and uniforms. Usually, like whittsend stated before, the operatives have no identifying equipment or uniforms/ patches.

cool, just thought by ur post u didnt read the front but theres still the israeli jet getting shot down in iranian airspace... that would also start a conflict as well..

what i said to a teacher why the spec ops was there "coz they were there to assasinate ur prez "
