So CoP is out in Russia, but us English people have to wait for a while for the translated version to arrive, but I decided to try it in russian anyway
The developers seem to have been spending a lot of time on their community forum and it shows, pretty much everything the community wanted has been implemented. The result is a game much more similar to the original Shadow of Chernobyl than the shittyish Clear Sky.
You start the game in one of CoP's many large areas, which are completely new to STALKER. It's all deserted landscape, with lots of run-down locations to explore. it's all open terrain instead of being horribly linear like in earlier stalker games which is a huge relief. Instead of being filled with a ridiculous amount of enemies there are relatively few people walking around the zone now, with a few extra mutants added here and there too
That blue floating.. thing in the picture above is a poltergeist, this particular one is haunting an abandoned factory complex and likes to kill you in a single hit by throwing heavy stuff at you when you can't even see it. It's awesome and all the mutants I've encountered so far have been improved upon with much better looking models and more dangerous and believable attacks than before.
Clear Sky improved on anomalies and artifact hunting greatly, and Call of Pripyat takes it even further. New anomalies, more deadly and more interesting than before contain artifacts that are a bitch to find but are well worth the effort.
New to STALKER altogether is CoP's healing mechanics. medkits, antirad, and bandages take time to go into effect so you can't spam your medkit key to survive anything. Food is necessary again and more important than in Shadow of Chernobyl, so you have to stock up before going out. These inventory items can now also be hotkeyed to F1-F4
The graphics are still typical for STALKER, very impressive sometimes and average at others. The DX10 effects are amazing, especially how rain makes stuff actually look wet, and the character models are actually decent for once. The graphics shine in Industrial/urban areas, but on the other hand foliage and trees still look like shit most of the time but the landscape itself looks much better. Keep in mind I made these screenshots on medium-highish settings as my 8800gt can't handle the fancy stuff
There's still a lot of this game I haven't seen yet, and I haven't got a clue what's going on story-wise of course, but so far Call of Pripyat is brilliant
