Hi guys,

I want to get something that allows my son and I to play against each other ... since PC obviously doesn't have that capability. My son loves Mario Kart, etc but there doesn't seem to be too many other racing games for the Cube. I really want to be able to play some of the Gran Tourismo games that have never been put on PC, which means PS2. Thoughts?

PS2, so many great games, not too expensive ETC ETC ETC...
plus it has Need for Speed which is a great game, GT series, Midnight Club. A lot of great shooters if you want those, Red Faction, Red Faction II, MGS series and a lot of PS1 games are backwards compatible.

you put a cheap chip in the xbox and the emulator software is free to download. Typically you burn the software a disk, dump some roms on it and visit nostalgia land

You can play with your son on your computer. Depends on which game. Right now the whole family plays street fighter on my pc (2 joypads).

By xbox, do you mean the original or 360? Also, instead of considering gamecube, get a Wii as it plays both gamecube and wii games(Mario Kart Wii is pretty fun anyway).

A regular tv won't do Wii, 360, or PS3 justice and I hope to spend much less than what any of those 3 would cost. So regular xbox, ps2, or gamecube are my top options. I guess when it comes down to it, I want the system that will allow good 2 player action. He's turning 6 next month so keep that in mind.

Forget the old xbox, and the Wii is no problem for a regular tv. Believe me, either ps2 or Wii.

Playstation 2 still has quite a few new games being released even today. It's cheap right now and it has a massive library of really good games.

Don't buy a refurbished PS2 when I think you can get a brand new one for less than $100.

I'd be willing to give up Gran Turismo, though. The whole point is for my son and I to be able to do 2 player games that he can handle.

The PS2 has the greatest library in the history of consoles by a very large margin. Buy a new one (around $100) so you don't get one with some fat nerds stink all over it.

I voted PS2. If you're interesting in modding and getting a bunch of SNES or NES games or downloading XBox games and all the work, then go with the XBox. But out-of-the-box, PS2 is definitely better. So many amazing games for it, as well as the original PS1 games.

I highly recommend getting Crash Team Racing (CTR) for the PS1. It blows away every Mario Kart game I've ever played, is ridiculously fun, and is jam-packed with material. It's one of the keystones to my own childhood/adolescence.

Actually this is an option that a friend of mine has made possible. He has one with a fair amount of good games that I'm going to pick up for cheap for now. Later I'll likely get a PS2.
