BF Heroes Developer Profile - Meet Roger EdgrenThe
Battlefield Heroes blog posted a new dev interview today with gameplay programmer, Roger Edgren.
Roger Edgren, Developer
Hello Heroes.
We hope you enjoyed
Naseer's interview last week, we sure did.
This week it was Roger's turn and he had some fun answers for you. Enjoy the read!
Who are you?Hi, I'm Roger Edgren
Where are you from?I grew up in Jönköping, Sweden, then moved to Linköping for my university studies and eventually ended up in Stockholm.
What do you do on heroes?I'm a gameplay programmer. That means that I produce bugs and then fix them, and get paid for the trouble. I have also been accused of doing some work with the logic around soldiers, weapons, vehicles, cameras and abilities and such, but I vehemently deny any such accusations.
What's your favourite Heroes aspect?Abilities. They are what set Heroes apart from most other shooters. Using the right ability at the right place and time can make a lot of difference.
What's your favourite class and why?Commando. I prefer games where a sense of tactics will win the day rather than lightning fast reactions, and playing successfully with a Commando demands a bit of patience, knowing when to attack and when to withdraw, and being able to think a few steps ahead, like what will I do after I have killed this guy and my stealth is reloading for another fifteen seconds and his friend starts shooting at me.
What is the best thing about being a developer?Helping a game take form and seeing your contribution come alive in front of your eyes is a very satisfying experience. Getting paid for doing something like that doesn't hurt either. Oh, and free breakfast on Fridays.
How did you become a developer?I have played games since forever, and I was very curious about the mysterious magic that produced those pretty pixels on the screen, so I started teaching myself programming at an early age.
What other games have you worked on?BF2 and BFBC. I was working on the AI for those games.
What did you do before Dice? After university I landed a job at Nokia where I joined a group that made games for one of their set-top boxes. That in turn led to a job at Team17 in England where I worked on a Worms game that unfortunately got cancelled before it reached the stores. I also did some late-stage coding on Futurama: the game at UDS in Norrköping.
What other games do you like?Left4Dead is cool. I also like Rainbow Six: Vegas, C&C, Starcraft, BF2 and BF1942, and Far Cry.
What is your all time favourite game? That's a hard one, but I would have to say Starcraft, since that’s the game I have definitely played the most.
Any favorite bands or music in general?I listen a lot to soundtracks from movies. Some of my favorites are Desperado, Crossroads, Fight Club, Collateral, Matrix and Aliens.
What do you do in your spare time?I put 9mm and .308W sized holes in paper targets.
Your weirdest hobby?See above.
And what is your Nerdiest apparel?Don’t have a lot of that. I guess my C&C GDI cap is the best I can do in that department.
If I could be a game character, I would be… ?A Starcraft Ghost. Those pesky Zergs need a good nuking.
