Okay, so I got this game because I loved the movie. I'll be honest, it was an epic action movie.
GAMEPLAY
Meh, it's a typical FPS action game. Lots of bullets, lots of enemies. It mostly takes place in France (), in a Middle-ages inspired town, in the Alps and also in Chicago. The game begins 5 hours after the movie ends.
Essentially, you have to move through linear levels while staying behind cover (ALWAYS--or you WILL die) and popping blind shots at enemies. As the game progresses, the enemies get progressively harder to kill: in the last stage, each requires at least 2 headshots on medium diff. By the by, headshots are the key to this game; you will waste your limited ammo shooting torsos (which require 6/7 shots per kill. YOu need to be able to aim quick, react quick and duck quick.
As I said, cover is important. You get to move behind cover (flanking), switch covering objects and push some covering objects around. In some levels, you spend your whole time behind cover. You do have regenerating health, though. When you kill enemies, you get "adrenaline", which allows you to perform the crazy moves (bullet curving, slow-mo firing, etc..)--no killing, no adrenaline, no fun.
You get, for the first third of the game, a 16-round handgun. As you progress, you get a 20-round DEagle-esque magnum, and later a pair of silenced dual-mag TEC9s, or something like that. Either way, those are the only guns you'll use. Every once in a while, you'll have to use a sniper (which is provided, and which has unlimited ammo) or a MG turret. You don't have to look for them, you just appear in them. However, you will get shot while shooting in it, so remeber to only use bursts.
The game is interspersed with training sessions, which give you unlockable abilities and moves. These will be necessary to master if you intend to beat the game.
I strongly recommend looking at the cutscenes: the environment is very nice (noir) and the plot is quite interesting. However, it is very short (took me 2 hours to beat).
PROS
-I like the moves which Wesley Gibson learns. Curving bullets is so cool, as is going into slow-mo to shoot a fast-moving bullet out of the air.
-I also like his witty and ironic lines.
-I like the slow-motion moving, it's amazingly difficult to master
-The weapon balance is good
-You can't spray and pray
-Beautiful game world
-Awesome french accents (although all they do is swear, which gets repetitive--but you'll learn a bit)
-Headshots
-Use of "adrenaline"
CONS
-NO DRIVING!! I was looking forward to that
-Very, very short game
-Linear levels
-Enemies are of 6 different types only (you'll learn to hate the ninja guys
-3 guns
-Too much blood gets splattered on your screen when you knife someone (blocks the view)
-Repetitive mission type (cover, shoot and advance, defeat boss, rinse and repeat)
-The credits are almost as long as the game
-The in-game rewards are stupid (dev team photos)
Overall--5/10. A nice concept and game world which is hindered by monotony and a very short length. I hope they include driving in a possible sequel.
