I just finished this game and I need to go on a rant about a story that makes no sense.

Who are all the slaves?  Why the hell were they on the ship and why are they trying to kill me?
Why were so many of the sailors sick, presumably with radiation poisoning?
How/why does an iceberg hold a ship hostage?
Who's the dude with the hood, the one who comes to you in flashbacks and you never see his face?
What was up with the captain, why did he run the ship into an iceberg?
What is the red light that magically heals you and kills enemies?
How/why do you start shooting energy balls out of your hands at the end of the game?
And, most of all, WHAT THE FUCK is that giant monster that rises out the ship at the end of the game and transports you to outer space?

The game was pretty good, but the story is the most random, incoherent piece of shit I've ever stumbled upon.

Is there some deeper meaning I'm missing here, or is the plot really that bad?

Spoiler (highlight to read):
the final boss is chronos, the god of time, by defeating him, he allows you to change the lead mechanic's actions, which devastated the captain, and convinced him to destroy the ship.  The game is based on an old Russian story (the one you hear in bits and pieces) about druids who gave up their souls to the enemy rather than face death (like the ships crew, they and others who have died in the arctic are the "demons" you are facing).  I enjoyed the story a lot, but it really doesn't come together until the end, and you have to pay attention earlier, or it does seem incoherent.

If you want a full synopsis I could give it to you

Right, but I still don't see what the lead mechanic did to make the captain destroy the ship.  The captain was just kinda crazy from the beginning, I don't remember someone pissing him off.  And after defeating Chronos, I don't remember doing anything that would have saved the ship or changed the captain's mind from destroying in in the first place.

I think they really needed to bring the story together with some more cut scenes.

The first mate had been railing on him for days, because the graphite rod that were used to absorb radiation were running empty, and had planned to take over as captain by getting him removed from command (that's what that letter was about), then the mechanic yells at him too, but you can make him give the captain the model ship instead, which shows your support, and stops the mutiny from taking place, and all of the other events never happen.

edit:  the sailors are sickened by radiation poisoning because the reactor has failed by that point, and the ship is leaking radiation, and slowly freezing without the main reactor to provide power

OK that makes sense, but I definitely don't remember giving the captain a model ship.  Must have just forgotten about it.  Thanks for setting me straight

Did anyone else notice that all the water physics touted during development didn't seem to be implemented much in the final game?
