Honestly, off the top of my head from what I've played:

  • Best Multiplayer Game: L4D (ZOOOEEEYYY!!); RA3 coop
  • Biggest Surprise: Spore (character creator; I knew it was going to be good, but it's really fun)
  • Biggest Letdown: Spore (cell/creature phase; why is everything so much stronger all time?)
  • "Oh shit it's 4 in the morning, I'll get to sleep right after I ______" Game (AKA: Most Addicting): Spore (editor)
  • Game most likely to send someone on a psychopathic rampage (AKA: Most Frustrating): N/A (I guess I'm just mellowing out as I approach 30)

I have a lot of games sitting on the shelves from 2008, but not much are opened. Instead, I consistently play a mixed bag of games that were released over the past 20+ years. It's hard to nominate anything when so many older games stand out much more in my mind.

I'd give Soulstorm the credit for multiplayer RTS (even though it was dependent on old CD keys to enable armies) if it wasn't for the fact that the Sisters of Battle got a bad reputation for a resource exploit. The fix was far too long in the making, and the end results were that it was irrecoverable. Add to that the fact that shot for shot, the IG could take them out (carapace/lasgun > power armor/heavy bolter? wtf) and the single player campaign lacked the spirited bantering between commanders in stronghold missions that Dawn of War was awesome for, and too many people labeled it 'fail.'
