So I've just started this game really, just got galaxy news radio working again.
Heard stuff about the main quest being a bit too short. Should I stop where I am now and do a lot of side quests and just explore the world and have fun?

It's up to you, you can do the side quests any time you want. Would probably be best to keep going to at least unlock some new places, better weapons, and level up a little, then take a break. My first time through I did the main quest only, and now it's my second time through and I'm doing a bunch of side quests and I've just got GNR working (although I didn't even have to do that since I wound up at some other locations that let me skip that).
I gotta say, I'm disappointed with the level cap. I spent a lot of my early perks on getting the 10% XP bonuses, and plus I walk around everywhere Well-Rested, so I'm racking in XP up the yin yang. I'm already at level 19 and I haven't even done all that many side quests (although the Wasteland Survival Guide is fucking long and ridiculous and gives you tons of XP).
When I started using the 10% XP bonus perks, I figured I might regret it later on when trying to raise my skills or get other attributes, but I liked ranking up real fast. It sucks, though, why should I bother going through with the rest of these side quests if the rewards aren't going to help me in the long run? The game is already easy enough if you're only using an Assault Rifle or Combat Shotbun, and those guns aren't even all that spectacular.
That's the thing about RPGs when it comes to side quests. You do those to get some great bonuses and weapons to help you defeat the ultimate final boss (as well as expand the story and the universe of the game), but when the ultimate final boss is... well... Spoiler (highlight to read):
non-existent, and any bad guys in the area are being blasted by a giant robot that's stealing all your kills, it makes the side quests for better armor and guns pointless once you've hit the level cap.

I really never liked the way they did stealth in FO3. They did it good in Splinter Cell, you could hide in the darkness. And in Far Cry, you could hide in the bushes. In Fallout you could hide in the....

Quick question- Spoiler (highlight to read):
I was traveling to vault 87 (or whatever one you meet you dad in) and on the way there I passed a big canyon that was filled with raiders and prisoners. It was way bigger than any other single raider camp I've ever seen and at the back of the canyon there was a large building . So here's my question: Am I going to go to this place for a side-quest? I really want to go down there and murder all those innocent raiders, but not if that would mean skipping a quest or something. The camp and canyon I'm talking about are just a little southeast of the garage that the earlier mentioned vault is hidden in.
