The network gained a public face in the 1990s. In 1993 the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign released the Mosaic web browser version 1.0, and by late 1994 there was growing public interest in the previously academic/technical Internet. By 1996 the word "Internet" was common public currency, but it referred almost entirely to the World Wide Web.

1. Americans > Do YOU really fear your government? Does the President influence in your answer? Does Cheney influence your answer? What does? Why or why not?...explain.
A. No, I do not fear my government. Nothing as of right now makes me FEAR my government, however there are some ideas by each president we have had that I disagree with, but that isn't fear.
2. English > First off, what do YOU like to be called, English, British, etc.?
Do YOU fear your govenrment, especially in regards to what you have done over there after the terrorist bombings?
A. Not English, so pass.
3. Everyone > What are your personal thoughts and feelings towards the US and our (I'm American) govenment and/or President? This question should be answered by articles or avyone but yourself.
A. Don't really get what you mean by articles or anyone but myself and frankly I am too lazy to read through all the previous posts cause I have work to do, but I will say that while I do not agree with all the policies of the US government right now, I will say I do agree with some. I also believe that no matter what actions the president makes there will always be people that disagree, and I believe this will help to contribute to a better America since people DO question their leaders. I do believe that our government is still sucessful, I mean look at it our government helps out the tsunami victims and stuff.
4. Everyone NOT American > Do YOU fear the United States of America? Why or why not?
A. Skip, I am American.
5. Everyone > When you specify a source in anything, mainly these threads, do you feel like it may be biased towards what YOU believe in? In other words, aren't most people going to help further their casue by putting something that agrees with them? How do you know the source is accurate? How do YOU know anything that we read, watch, see is real or the truth? Wouldn't the media want to show YOU what it wants you to see and it may not necessarily be the truth?
A. I do not know what is necessarily "true" or what isn't, but I will see it seems to be my experience that the media wants to attract viewers. Personally, I know more people that are interested in the bad things going on and not the good things, and I find that when I watch the news I do notice more of the media when it comes to the war and stuff is bad things, never really good things (on occasion there are good things, of course). I also watch many different news stations and read different articles written by different sides of the spectrum (the democrat/republican sides) to try to kind of view each point that both sides make so I can form my own belief. It definitely is hard though cause you have to sift through all this information to find the bits that are definitely true.
6. Everyone > Is it possible to hate your govenrment but love your country?
A. I'm not so sure it is. Since the government is the driving factor between your country, I'm not sure it'd work like that. I like my government (on most things) and I like my country. I know a woman that escaped Communism and she hated the government, as well as the country (because it was under communism). I believe that maybe it is possible, but since government is often reflected in the view of the country (or for me it is), if you dislike the government you will often have negative feelings toward your country.
7. Everyone > How do YOU define terrorism? Do you consider the 9/11 attacks justified and/or the London attacks justified?
A. I define terrorism as acts to cause terror among the people. It really depends on what you mean by justified. The Americans attacking British in surprise attacks and stuff way back in the Revolution could be considered terrorism I guess, yet I am proud that occured. Today, I do not like the terrorism when Americans die. I think that the terrorists can justify their actions, however I cannot; therefore, I do not things that 9/11 or the London bombings were justified. The fact that I was in London about a week before the bombings was quite scary to think about (and that's basically what terrorism is all about, causing fear to disrupt everyday life). I remember when 9/11 came everybody was worried about flying on planes and stuff, but that's just a part of life. You can either let fear run your life, or you can go through it (and if I had decided to let fear of planes ruin my life, I would have missed my 8th grade East Coast field trip, a trip to Europe and trips to Mexico, so to me the fear of flying was not worth it).
8. Everyone > How do YOU know whats real and what's not? Aren't a majority of us biased towards a certain way, so we tend to lean towards that when we read or watch the news?
A. I got to start shortening my answers and get back to work so I'll try to keep this simple. To find out what's real or not I either encounter something first hand, get the news directly from somebody who was there when an event occured, or in the case of the news I watch multiple stations that take different perspectives as well as conduct research on the internet. And yes, I think we will probably lean that way, and we will find the information that we want to see (usually).
9. Everyone > Can a government REALLY be afraid of its people? Why?
A. I don't really see why a government would be afraid of it's people unless there was a civil war or something starting, but then again I can't really devote much effort into trying to think this up cause of work.
10. Everyone > How can the United States better ourselves? Do YOU really see us as selfish and that we only go after out interests first?
A. I'm American so I can't really answer this question, and I'll skip the first part cause that'd be a long answer but the 2nd part I'd say no.
11. Everyone > Do YOU think Americas problems will go away after Bush leaves the office?
A. I do not believe so. I believe if we pull out of the war in Iraq right now, our problems will only get worse. You can't run away from your problems, you must stay and face them. I would have definitely not have enjoyed Kerry as a president cause he seems to much of a say-whatever-needs-to-be-said kind of guy to me, and I want somebody that has a stance on anything (even if I disagree). While I don't think President Bush is the best president we have ever had, I do think that out of the choices in the presidential election he was the best one (but this is my opinion, and since I can't vote yet my opinion really doesn't matter).
12. Everyone > Isn't the 'First Amendment Section' one of you referred to still having their right to free speech? Where in the Constitution does it say that goeverment "workers" can't put them somewhere else where they can still practice their free speach, but it won't harm whomever they're protesting against? ... that question was troublesome to type.
A. I don't really get this. If you are talking about people protesting that are getting moved (to prison or something, not sure what you are asking), I'd say look at Sheehan and all her protesting.
13. Everyone > Why do some people on these forums, let alone in life react so hostile towards people who disagree with them? To those who do this, do YOU always feel that YOU'RE right all the time and that no one can touch YOU?
A. They act hostile cause they get fired up with what they believe in. I think it's a good thing. I personally am open to many different things, and I love hearing other people's perspective and getting in a debate. If they come up with good points and best me, I'll definitely consider changing my views.
14. Everyone > What does Conservative and Liberal mean to YOU?
A. Just the different viewpoints on political issues.
15. Americans > Do YOU really feel that with these wire tappings, that YOU are being watched and heard by our government?
A. It definitely could be possible, I was in Europe when there were multiple bombings and stuff going on (London Bombings, some attacks in Spain or something, bombings in Turkey or something). Do I really care? No and it's cause I got nothing to hide. If the US government wants to spy on me, they can go ahead. Heck, I'll make it easy on them and they can call me up and ask me what I do on a day to day basis. I really don't care, and it is my belief that anybody that does is hiding something.
16. Everyone > In reference to..^^^^....What are your thoughts on them?
A. Go ahead and use em, if it helps capture terrorists great, if they want to monitor me I say go ahead cause I got nothing to hide.
17. Everyone > What do YOU think about the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Meaning>>> Are they justified? Why or why not? Why do YOU really think we are there?
A. I think at the time, and I could be wrong, the intel said they had WMDs. If Bush hadn't gone to war after 9/11, everybody would have hated him, especially if it turned out Iraq had WMDs. Since he went to war and there were not WMDs, people hate him. I think he was screwed either way. Some people say we are there for oil and whatnot, personally I don't really care as of right now why we were originally there for, but what it seems like to me is that we are there to bring democracy to Iraq (right now). I'll ask my friend what his brother thinks cause his brother is in the marines (and he is joining the marines soon).
18. Everyone > What is so great about America? Or not so great?
A. I think America gives opportunities to all to succeed, or to try to succeed. Other stuff would take too long to type up.
19. Everyone > Do YOU think this so called American Empire will fall?
A. Of course. Every empire falls eventually. The Roman empire fell. The British empire fell when America defeated them in the Revolution. One day America won't be the top anymore, and some other country might be (maybe China or something, I don't know).
20. Everyone > I couldn't think of another question regarding this topic... so here is a curve ball.
Supposedly in the first 15 million years of the earth's existence there was absolutely no life whatsoever. How did we; humans, animals, etc., become who and what we are?
A. I'm not sure, I don't follow this topic too much. I think all different perspectives (evolution, and creation [bible, I'm not sure what the name is called if this isn't it]) should be taught to students and people that have an interest in this topic. Being not too into the sciences, I haven't heard those arguments, and I don't follow the bible so that's out of my grasp too.
A. No, I do not fear my government. Nothing as of right now makes me FEAR my government, however there are some ideas by each president we have had that I disagree with, but that isn't fear.
2. English > First off, what do YOU like to be called, English, British, etc.?

The upshot of all this is that we live in a universe wgise age we can't quite compute, surrounded by stars whose distances from us and each other we don't altogether know, filled with matter we can't identify, operating in conformance with physical laws whose properties we don't truly understand.
Again, I will admit there are serious holes. Here are the biggest two.
1. Life is made of two basic things: DNA and proteins. However, DNA has no purpose without proteins and proteins can't be made without DNA. It's a circular problem, which can only be explained if they rose simultaneously. Unlikely.
2. Proteins are incredibly complex. They are made spontaneously, but the chances of getting the right combinations of amino acids.. Well... imagine a poker machine with 1000+ reels, with 20 different symbols (each representing an amino acid). Now how many times would you have to play to get the symbols (all 1000+ of them) to arrange in a specific order? A number too large to be written in any format. But it happens, and the chemical it makes is known as collagen.
Finally, everything just seems so LUCKY. The number of lucky breaks we have needed to get here is beyond count.
1. Americans > Do YOU really fear your government? Does the President influence in your answer? Does Cheney influence your answer? What does? Why or why not?...explain.
A. No. The great thing about America is that, if your goverment fucks up, you can usually ignore it and it will go away eventually. Most people like to bitch, I just wait 4 years and *poof* no more dipshit.
2. English > First off, what do YOU like to be called, English, British, etc.?
