You know you can burn those movies for yourself and remove all those warning screens? I'm not saying burn a friends copy, burn your own copy as backup. That way you have the original and don't have to sit through that copyright shit.Parker wrote:

The FBI may say so, but I'd like to see a court case where someone has been found guilty of theft by downloading a movie.Parker wrote:

no.ghettoperson wrote:

i photocopy business/legal documents....not the artwork i have hanging in my house.
thats the difference.
moral high ground?
god damn right...
i may be a lot of things, but im not a thief.
But ok, perhaps you aren't the best example. But were I to go to my library, and photocopy a page from a book that I needed for an assignment (my uni library has books we can't remove due to the cost of them) I am stealing according to you.
so is it still OK if i upload it and let everyone else have my "backup copy"?TheAussieReaper wrote:

not at all.ghettoperson wrote:

library:
a place set apart to contain books, periodicals, and other material for reading, viewing, listening, study, or reference, as a room, set of rooms, or building where books may be read or borrowed.
that is what you are meant to do there.
I agree, however technically speaking, by doing so I am infringing on someone Intellectual Property in the exact same way as if I were to download a movie.Parker wrote:

Anyway, I'm done essay writing, so I'm off for a few hours sleep. I'll check up on this later tonight, when no doubt it'll have hit 30 pages and I won't be bothered to read it.
the library purchased the book (or it was donated), they didnt steal it....so no, the person who wrote that book, along with the publisher were paid in full for their work.ghettoperson wrote:

It's no different from sneaking into the cinema without paying.
The act of sneaking in is wrong, yes.
But, do the film makers still make enough money to operate as businesses (and therefore make a profit) from the paying public?
Yes, they do.

Cheap people justifying theft makes me laugh. especially when they reference history they obviously don't understand.

Sneaking into a cinema reminds me more of wrangling extra M&M's out of a vending machine than trying a game before you slap $50 on it. I'm sorry if people still don't like it, but not everybody (I still buy my titles and swallow any remorse later) can afford to play along.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

Uh...no. I was showing how absurd the "it isn't worth buying, so I'll just torrent it instead" line of thought is.un wrote:

And everyone here needs to remember that even if you do pirate with a partial conscience (i.e. buying games you pirate and like, and quickly tossing ones you don't), there is an excess of immature high schoolers who pirate, but only do so because they are getting stuff for free. They are the people who don't buy games, even if they are good. I know most of the people arguing in this thread are past that stage in their life, but you have to remember that kids will always exist.
Edit: Thanks, because yeah, I had completely forgotten what that advertisement looked like and what silly methods they resorted to to try to protect their intellectual property...
Not everybody can play along in the game of accruing luxury cars, either. Does that mean people go out and steal them for that reason?I'm sorry if people still don't like it, but not everybody (I still buy my titles and swallow any remorse later) can afford to play along.

The music aggravated me before I even knew what it was. Luckily, I don't remember ever coming across one I couldn't skip.
That's true. But you aren't going to get money from people who have no money, so why aggravate the majority of your paying customers with nagware?nukchebi0 wrote:

Do you honestly think only poor kids torrent games? You are way misled there, if so. Rich kids have money, yet still torrent. Its not an issue of lack of paying ability (as it seems to be as people mature - I notice that most of the non-broke people here in their 20s pirate less frequently). That's true. But you aren't going to get money from people who have no money, so why aggravate the majority of your paying customers with nagware?
On an off-note, I've never had an issue with DRM before. I don't understand how it can be so annoying.
and, therefore, so will piracy.nukchebi0 wrote:

Yeah, you're right. Its because they are too immature and myopic to see the consequences of their actions. A bit sad, really.

A better example would be...
Lets say FlamingManiac designed a machine capable of breaking the laws of thermodynamics and providing the world with an unlimited power supply. He spent 15 years of his life in pursuit of this.
These machines only work on a small scale so every house/car that wants one has to have it's own individual unit. FM whacks a patent on it because he invented it so he wants to profit from his 15 years of work. He's charging a pretty hefty price per unit because he understands that any person who buys one will never have to pay a power bill again.
Does that make it okay for me, because I cbf paying for it, to reverse engineer his design and build one for my own personal use?

Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.
Well, it's a case of "well, I'm only costing them XX for this single game".
But, the thing about anti-piracy measures is it's like if cinemas tried to stop people sneaking in by building them inside impregnable fortresses.
It'd piss all the paying customers off.
And the little fuckers would still find some way to sneak in.

Scorpion0x17 have you read the article? It's not just a case of 'i wouldnt buy it so they lose nothing' at all i'm afraid.
Thanks to everyone that has read it. It is big but when I read it I couldn't stop. Thought it was important to post it here because people clearly don't understand the effect they're having. In fact a fair few can't even seem to comprehend it. I've even read a few posts from people that seem to think piracy is a good thing for the industry .

I love the excuses you guys give. Yeah I'm going to drink this hot chocolate, then I'm going to decide if it's worth money. Let me eat at this restaurant and then dine and dash because I ate the chicken too quickly.
Difference is for the games industry, the product is all they have. For films not only the box office sells, but the merchandise and the DVD sales later.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

That and DRM is more like checking for tickets as people enter the cinema/theatre, rather than having an impregnable secuirity system placed around the cinema.
Hmm... Here's a good question... Would you pirate games if you had to crack the software yourself?

No, I doubt many people would. Which is kind of funny, because the people who dedicate their lives to cracking games are getting freeloaded off of just like the game companies are. I think that I find that extremely ironic, actually.
Yes we have. Downloading a movie/games/music/... is copyright infringement. Uploading a movie is copyright infringement. Downloading movies is legal in most countries. Uploading is illegal in most countries. Most people would agree that copyright infringement is morally wrong. The law however doesn't care about morals.Parker wrote:

Just because the FBI warning thing say that it's stealing, that doesn't make it stealing according to the law.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
