Multiplayer: Battlefield 2 by far the game I've ever played online in terms of having a laugh with mates, sense of achievement when I was but a mere noob etc.

Multiplayer: BF2/TF2
Can't decide which. In hindsight BF2 was full of game breaking flaws and very poor developer support, but just thinking back has made me remember the awesome feeling I got playing it, and wanting to play it whenever I wasn't.
Singleplayer? I can't single out one game. Nothing in recent years I know that much. Probably the first time I played through Half Life.

Best single-player: Lvl 1-80 in World of Warcraft.
Best multi-player: Endgame in World of Warcraft.

But rly, Half Life games are awesome single-player (or were, before Source engine... utterly revolutionary games back then) and Multiplayer has to be Call of Duty 1/2, Team Fortress 2 or Battlefield 2.
