Anyone play this? What is it? Steam has been blasting adverts about it for a while now. Is this some kind of MMORPG like WoW?

I wouldn't recommend the game for a casual gamer. You can spent hundreds of hours in eve and still not know what the hell is going on.
Played it for 2 months and thankfully escaped it's evil grasp before losing anymore money and time, lol.
Unless you join a good corporation, the game becomes very repetitive and boring. I found that running missions and mining to generate isk becomes old fast. That and the fact that the my corp was getting war dec'd weekly from numerous other corporations with higher skill point players ended it for me. Right before I left the game my corp engaged some war targets(5 on 5), and the lag was absolutely ridiculous.
If you do decide to play the game, make sure to do some research first on character creation and decide what you want to specialize in. The figure of speech, "A jack of all trades is a master of none" applies heavily in this game.
